donegal shoemakers
« on: Friday 03 July 09 18:44 UTC (UK) »

hi,i am researching the burns/byrne side of my family.i have various census, marriage and death certs for my g/g grandfather patrick burns.all have him listed as shoemaker.i have recently found the birth cert for my g/grandfather(1855). on this cert patrick is named byrne still listed as shoemaker, born donegal, age 36.married in Glasgow 1840. would a trade directory exist from before patricks marriage date. its a long shot i know as cert doesnt give townland.

Unlikely to find a shoemaker on a trades directory. Practically every townland had a shoemaker - really a part time job. Check out Griffiths valuation for Patrick Byrne. Also check Donegal census as tradesmen's tools were handed down to family members.

hi derrylass, patrick was already in glasgow before griffiths so is unlikely to be on the register.

Slater's directory of 1846 is availabile online at : http://www.failteromhat.com/slater.htm

plenty of shoemakers listed - but I dont see any Burns/Byrne shoemakers  in Donegal at the moment..

hi shane.

i had a look at the website you suggested.but as the date for slaters is 1846 and patrick was married and living glasgow by 1840 i dont think he would be mentioned in slaters.do you know of any earlier trade directories as shoemaker and place of birth donegal around 1815 are the only clues i have for patrick.

An edition of Pigots Directory covering all Ireland was published in 1824 - but I dont know of any source for this online..

Directories only refer to towns. Here is Piggots 1824 directory for Donegal which is on Lindel's Donegal Resources Site

There's a list of some directories which cover Co. Donegal on this thread (under DONEGAL RESOURCES & LINKS)-
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,383512.0.html

Please let me know if you find any other online directories not listed.
