Catherine Smedley – 1861 census look up

Could someone please help me to locate an ancestor of mine in the 1861 census?

Her name is Catherine Smedley who was born in the March qtr. of 1852 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire.

In the 1871 census she was staying with my Second great grandfather Harry Smedley in Ashby de la Zouch and was listed as his niece aged 19, a wool worker.

I am particularly interested in finding her in the 1861 census as all four of Harry’s brothers emigrated. Three of them to Australia by 1861. So Catherine may have been left behind in England. But where?  If anyone can help me find her it would be very helpful as it would help to put in a further piece of the jigsaw puzzle.

She doesn't seem to be in the 1861 census for Leicestershire.

Many, many thanks for looking Linda.

She was definately in Leicestershire in 1852 when she was born and again in 1871 when she was with her Uncle my second Great Grandfather.

She must have been left behind when her father emigrated, before he left for Australia I have a hunch that the brothers ( one of them her father) who emigrated may have gone to Nottingham before making their move to the new country.

Catherine may have had a brother John and sister Emily but, at the moment this is just a hunch. 

It's all part of an interesting jigsaw with which I am obsessed at the moment.

Yes Please this would be very useful because one of the four Smedley brothers who emigrated to Australia (Smauel Young Smedley) probably married a Catherine Ball before leaving the UK.

Will send you my E-Mail address internally.

Also would it be possible to look at an earlier census (eg 1851) to find a Catherine Ball with her parents Thomas and Ellen in Ashby de la Zouch this would then help to show that I am on the right tracks?

Is there any possibility that your can get a place of birth for (K) Catherine Ball?  I assume it is Ashby de la Zouch, She does not appear in the 1861 Census.

So a different approach.

I looked for a Catherine born about the right time in Ashby and looked for similar surnames.

They are in the same building as a family called BAKER.



In 1851 the Katherine Ball was born in Ashby.

Looking at Freebmd there is a marriage between Catherine Ball and Samuel Young Smedley in 1852 Qtr March 7a 285 District Leicester.
