birth for an Alexander Stewart in 1814 in Lochbroom (wondering if this is the eldest son of Donald Stewart and Janet Morrison, although there is no mother listed on the entry it mentions father as Donald Stuart of Ardmair).
just wondering if anyone has any info on this alexander stewart thanks Michele

I live in sight of Ardmair, Michele. I know that there were some Stewarts on Isle Martin which is just off Armair. Would that possibly be the family.
I'm sure they moved to Tanera Mor - just off Achiltibuie. It's still in Lochbroom Parish.

PS - Lochbroom is quite a big Parish Joe - have you got any addresses?

Assynt is a bit further North - starts just south of Elphin. Ardmair is deffo Lochbroom!
But there were lots of intermarriages.
It might be worth following up Alexander Stewart in 1841 and a possible death post 1855 though.

I think Michele is referring to an Alexander Stewart who was bpt 20 March 1814 in Lochbroom Parish, father Donald Stewart.
Lochbroom is in Ross and Cromarty, so I'm not sure that he would say his birthplace was Sutherland. Nedd is quite a way from Ardmair.
I'll have a did around as well.

I've found a possible family: 1841 - 75-10-9
Ruadh (now Rhue)- which is between Ullapool and Ardmair, Lochbroom parish, Ross & Cromarty:
Donald Stewart, 85-89, crofter, b. R & C Catherine, 60-64, b. R & C Alexander, 25-29, b. R & C Duncan, 20-24, b. R & C Ann, 25-29, b. R & C
I don't think the Sutherland ones are the correct ones, Joe

Think we double posted, Joe
Can't find Alex on the 1851 though - we'll have to keep looking!

Hi Joe and Gadget
As you have both probably gathered, there is another Donald and Janet Morrison having children in Assynt:
1. NIEL STUART 1815 2. WILLIAM STUART 1822 3. WILLIAM STUART Birth 1832 4. MURDOCH STUART 1819
Nothing showing on IGI for the R & C couple (using both names), entries are probably, as Michele has found, just with father's name for which you would need to search by the batch code.
Regards.
Monica

That's the one Joe - he's still in the Ullapool area - went off for a coffee - I've got the image up
I'll put the full details up in a moment.
PS Monica Ardmair is not Assynt
Here it is:
1851 - 75-6-29 Morefield, Ullapool, Lochbroom
Alex Stewart, hd, 36, fisherman, Anne, 30 (?). b. Ross Christy, d, 10 Donald, s, 8 Kenneth, s, 5 Catherine, d, 1 Murdo, servant, 20, servant
b. Ross, Lochbroom (others on page say Ross, Morefield - this I think is Rhue - Morefield is just on my side of Ullapool)

That's good Joe - we've now got them and the answer is that Catherine was the mother not Janet as far as I can see - especially with the names!
Added - can't find a death record for him in Lochbroom

Sadly, as far as I can recall, the Lochbroom records are very iffy before 1810. One of my friends had to go to Edinburgh to trace up Sessions Minutes to find his ancestors Assynt is much better recorded.
