Anthony Maughan
« on: Thursday 05 October 06 15:58 UTC (UK) »

I'm looking for info on Anthony Maughan, my Gr Gr Grandfather.
Born about 1835, I think in Sligo, but not sure.
He was a farmer with several sons, including my Gr Grandfather Charles  born 1862 who emigrated to Derbyshire England.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello clogdancer,

There are no listings for Maughan in the 1848-64 extracts of Griffith's Valuations which you'll find on John Hayes failteromhat.com website but there are listings in the following counties ... Derry, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Limerick, Mayo, Offaly and Westmeath.

There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Hi Christopher
Since I posted the request, I've discovered that he came from Ballina, Co. Mayo.
Almost certainly, he was Catholic.
Where do I go from here?
