I am hoping someone knows a great deal about the village of Sandiway. I have just received the Will of my Gt.Gt.Gt.Gt.Grandmother Ellin Mountfield (Nee Williamson) dated 1818. In it she mentions "My Leased Tenement in Sandiway". I never thought of a rural place like Sandiway having Tenements. Can anyone throw any light on what she is referring to. Also she bequeathed her Hand Mirror and "hand board" to her neice. (What is a hand board) Any suggestion welcome. Barbara in Melbourne

Although from Cheshire I do not know a lot about Sandiway - but think that the word "Tenement" must refer to something different to it's present day use.
Have you had a look at www.old-maps.co.uk - there is an 1881 map which show it nearly as I remember 40 odd years ago!!
