Have you looked at www.workhouses.org.uk
This is a site about workhouses and the like and there are a lot of links from the pages.
On another note I see you have the name Topping in your query, I have a relation with "Topping" as their middle name. They lived, at the time, in the same area as your relative........ Marketgate & Ladybridge St
Good luck with your search

Would you have anything re:West Grimsby St? Unable to find them on the 1891 Census & only found 3 children. I'm sure there's more children somewhere. The KERNAGHAN name has several spellings and that could be the problem.
Dave
ps my mum was a SPINK

That area of Arbroath has been run-down for a long time and has been redeveloped in part. I will send you a picture later today. Any others if you wish.
I have no information on the names you have. Have you visited the local website. They have a Family Tree forum. You never can tell. The site is here :- www.theshoppie.com

many thanks again. All the Forfarshire lines of my family seem to have come from Arbroath although the "family legend" was that they came from Dundee.

Through the site you recommended I have made contact with the local archives in Arbroath and hopefully they may shed some light on the KERNAGHAN/TOPPING families.

If you have a look at the National Library of Scotland website you will find an 1858 map of Arbroath and can see the extent of W Grimsby

There's a website (users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/menu.html) which gives a list of the staff and inmates in Arbroath Workhouse in 1881. This would be too early for your David Kernaghan but it includes a map showing it's location. The 1901 Census of the Workhouse might show him as an inmate. If the website doesn't work, simply Google - Arbroath Workhouse.
