1891 Census look up please WINCH
« on: Wednesday 11 October 06 12:21 BST (UK) »

There were two grand children of Daniel Winch for whom there are a number of possible births.  Can anyone locate them in 1891 please to help identify their parents.

Frank Winch born 1867 probably in Preston
Albert Winch born 1870 Kings Walden

Thank you

I couldn't find them in 1891 but did you see 1881? In St. Ippollitts is
George Jeeves  Head  36(?)  Labourer   Hitchin
Catherine "       Wife    33      Straw Plaiter   "
ALBERT WINCH Stepson 10 Scholar              Kings Walden
Basil Winch            "          8     "                                "
Edward Winch        "        2                                        "
Arthur Winch          "         5      "                   (can't read where from)
John Jeeves          Son   3 mos                     St. Ippollitts
RG11 Piece 1420 Folio; 47 page 7

and up the road is
William Winch and his family - no Frank though

However in 1871 there is
Frogmore End in Kings Walden

Daniel Winch   Head  Mar 59   Ag. Lab  Hitchin
Catherine "     Daur   Unm 23 Plaiter         "
Louisa      "        "         "   15 Scholar          "
Betsy Winch      "              13                   Hitchin
FRANK    "         Son            3                     Hitchin
ALBERT    "           "              4 mo                 Kings Walden

RG10 Piece 1369 Folio 120 page 17

I can also find them in 1861 together with wife Catherine. It's transcribed as Winck though.
This lists the family as

Daniel          Head 48
Catherine    Wife  46
Ann              Daur  21
Jane             Daur  19
Thomas        Son    17
Catherine     Daur   14
Louisa          Daur   5
Betsey         Daur   3

all except the mother were born in Hitchin. She was born in Kings Walden

Therefore perhaps Frank and Albert were Daniel's children, not grandchildren. Alternatively, since in 1867, when Frank was born, Catherine senior would have been 52, and then 55 when Albert was born, perhaps the 1891 census is telling us that he was Catherine Junior's child! Though that also lists several other children not including Frank.

There is a marriage of Catherine Winch and George Jeeves  2nd quarter 1880 Hitchin Vol 3a page 471

There's also a birth of Albert Winch 4th quarter 1870 in Hitchin Vol 3a page 309 and a couple of Franks in 4th quarter 1867 Hitchin Vol 3a page 290 and 281

Looking more at these people (I've got interested in them!!) in 1891 I've found

Gosmore
Daniel Winch   Head  M  79   Hitchin
Catherine "     Wife   M  75   Kings Walden

and in 1881
Daniel Winch  Head 67
Catherine "    Wife  66
FRANK      "   Grandson 12

I don't know whether any of these ramblings help at all. It was very interesting though!

Thank you for all that Isobel.  I had seen a lot of it before and concluded that Frank and Arthur were Daniel's grandchildren.

What I hadn't found, and thank you in particular for that, was Catherine married to and living with George Jeeves.
The only likely parents for Frank and Albert from what I know about the rest of Daniel's children were Catherine and her sister Jane.  Although Frank would just about squeeze into brother Thomas's family of at least eleven other children.  I was hoping an 1891 census entry would help me avoid purchasing birth certificates for the two Franks.  The three extra Winch children make me wonder if George was previously married but living with Catherine from 1871 onwards.
