Bastardy Bond
« on: Thursday 12 October 06 16:18 BST (UK) »

Hi

Can any one tell me about Barstardy bonds/papers - My great great grandfather was born in 1861 in Goring and no father is listed on the birth certificate - could there have been a bond made against the father or is it too late?

Thanks for any help.

It may be too late.  Contact Chichester Record Office and ask them if they have any for that time for that parish.

Chichester?  Oxford would be a better bet for Goring.

Hi
I know this maybe a stupid question but
Can you tell me if when there is a birth outside of marriage is there always bastardy bonds?
Because we have a few of them in our tree and who love to find out who the father's were?
Kind regards Chris

Bastardy bonds are generally held in the parish chest.  Not many of these records survive but where they do they give a fascinating insight into the poor of the day and the care that the parish took of them - or not as the case may be.   They were the equivalent of today - trying to make the father be responsible for the upkeep of his child, rather than the parish having to pay.  The example that I have was 1804 and I suspect that not too many years after that they ceased to be in use.   Once the workhouses were up and running then the poor unfortunate woman and her child ended up there.
The local record office will be able to tell you what records still exist.

Hi
Thank you very much for telling me that.
But the mother and child did end up in the workhouse so I expect I would have no luck in finding out who the father was.
Thanks again for your help.
Kind regards Christine
