Gauld's

Hi, have just joined the chat and not really sure how it all works as yet, so please excuse. Someone called Brian was asking about an Alexander Gauld b. abt 1798 - this could be a relation of mine but I'm having a bit of a problem so can't be sure..... I have an Alexander Gauld b. abt 1844 Keith, I thought I'd traced back his parents being Alexander Gauld (b. abt 1798 Mortlach - parents Alexander Gauld and Jean Shaw) and Jane Mellis. Then I found Alexr. (b. 1844) m certificate which showed mother as Jane Burnett, father Alexr. Gauld (soldier and deceased by 1868) - the problem being I cannot find a single thing connecting these three together. Jane Burnett may or may not have been married to Alexr. Gauld, she later married an Alexr. Bennett in 1849. It's driving me crazy, if anyone can shed any light it'd be much appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat.
From the IGI, 'extracted', Jane Burnet (note the one 't') married Alexander Bennet (one t) on 29 Dec 1849, Keith Banff, Scotland. (Note there are another 2 Jane Burnets marrying in the NE of Scotland in 1849 alone).
In all of Scotland on Scotlands People, there is only one Jane Bennett (widow of Alexander Bennett (crofter), dying after 1855. (tried variant spellings).
She dies on 28 Aug 1891 in Keith, Banffshire. Death entry marks her as 'illegitimate' and daughter of William Burnet and ? Jane (poorly written), Fraser, M.S. Kerr. There is no indication of other husbands on her death entry.
Regards, Steve .

A search of the IGI done - 1835 to 1875, chidren - all 'extracted' to Alexander Bennett and Jane Burnet
GEORGE BENNET Birth: 09 MAR 1854 Ch: 02 APR 1854 Keith, Banff, Scotland WILLIAM BENNET Birth: 01 JUL 1858 Keith, Banff, Scotland JEAN BENNETT Birth: 28 DEC 1860 Keith, Banff, Scotland MARGARET BENNETT Birth: 17 AUG 1862 Keith, Banff, Scotland BESSIE BENNETT Birth: 25 JUN 1864 Keith, Banff, Scotland JAMES BENNETT Birth: 12 MAR 1867 Keith, Banff, Scotland
So, it'd possibly appear that 'your' Alexander does not belong to this family?

From Scotlands People. 11 Alexander Gaulds born Scotlandwide from 1840 to 1855. However if his father was a Soldier - he could have been born anywhere.
22/03/1841 GAULD ALEXANDER DAVID GAULD/FRANCES ROBERTSON FR505 M Cargill /PERTH 338/ 0030 0027 2 11/06/1843 GAULD ALEXANDER ALEXANDER GAULD/MARY WILSON FR258 M Glass /ABERDEEN 199/ 0020 0073 3 29/01/1845 GAULD ALEXANDER ALEXANDER GAULD/MARGARET MCDONALD U Inverkeithny /BANFF 158/ 0020 0038 4 30/09/1845 GAULD ALEXANDER ALEXANDER GAULD/ELIZABETH CUMMINGS M Aberdeen ABERDEEN CITY/ABERDEEN 168/A00 0250 0159 5 13/11/1846 GAULD ALEXANDER GEORGE GAULD/CHRISTIAN FALCONER M Strachan /KINCARDINE 268/ 0030 0111 6 12/01/1848 GAULD ALEXANDER ALEXANDER GAULD/ANNE ROBERTSON FR507 M Cargill /PERTH 338/ 0030 0032 7 01/08/1850 GAULD ALEXANDER ALEXANDER GAULD/ELIZABETH MILNE FR7054 M Aberdeen ABERDEEN CITY/ABERDEEN 168/A00 0260 0056 8 04/12/1852 GAULD ALEXANDER WILLIAM GAULD/ELIZABETH MCPHERSON FR623 M Mortlach /BANFF 162/ 0030 0312 9 22/01/1854 GAULD ALEXANDER JOHN GAULD/ISOBEL PETRIE M Newhills /ABERDEEN 226/ 0020 0285 10 25/05/1854 GAULD ALEXANDER ALEXANDER GAULD/ANNE TOUGH FR328 M Culsamond /ABERDEEN 186/ 0020 0103 11 27/10/1844 GAULD ALEXANDER SHAW ALEXANDER GAULD/JEAN MELLIES M Mortlach /BANFF 162/ 0030 0246
An IGI search only brings up 25 Alexander Gaulds born worldwide 1840 to 1850 - so possibly he wasn't registered. Away to search for an Alexander Burnett born in the same timeframe in case he was born out of wedlock.
Update: 43 born 1839 to 1849 - all checked non appear to be to have a Jane Burnet/t mother.

Hello
My last post? on this thread. Hopefully someone else can provide better insight. Off the IGI - children born to Alexander Gauld and Jane Mellis/Mellies - all Mortlach, Banff
James Smith Gauld b. 22 Apr 1841, ch 01 May, Mortlach, Banff Isobella Findlater Gauld b. 02 Jan 1843 ch. 12 Jan 1843 Alexander Shaw Gauld b. 18 oct 1844, ch. 27 Oct 1844 William Gauld b. 15 Apr 1846, ch. 26 Apr 1846 Ann Gauld b. 23 Mar 1848, ch. 16 Apr 1848 George Gauld b. 22 Nov 1849, ch. 08 Dec 1849 Mary Gauld b. 26 Jan 1852, ch. 14 Feb 1852 Andrew Adam Gauld b. 10 Sep 1856 Thomas Gauld b. 15 Mar 1861
Checked SP for marriages of Alexander Shaw Gauld from 1855 onwards - only one - he marries in 1925 - and he's in his 20's.... marries in Edinburgh Information removed due to copyright violation. See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/copyright.php for more details
'Your' Alexander Gauld I take it, married in 1868? whom did he marry where did he marry - who were the witnesses?
Thank you. Regards, Steve .

Jane Burnet (note the one 't') married Alexander Bennet (one t) .... but having noted it, ignore all spelling variations until you get into the 20th century. There was no such thing as 'correct' spelling, and you will find differing spellings of the same person's name. Make sure you always search for all variations of any particular name.
