Exhumation is my game

Thanks Fitty.............
« on: Tuesday 09 November 04 15:07 UTC (UK) »

...........for telling me there is still a printing company in Leeds with the Jowett name!   I have made enquiries of Jowett & Sowry and today had a letter from the present Managing Director.   It was founded by his grandfather and my husband's g.g. uncle in 1888 (although he won't know that until he gets my next letter) and is still going strong on the office furniture side, although the printing side was sold off in 1974 "to a major public company".   I am hoping to discover that this 'major' company is Polestar Jowetts Ltd!

He tells me that he has a Wage Book for 1893, which I am naturally trying to get my hands on, and some early photographs, so.................watch this space!

Jill,

Any progress here?

Call me an old sticky-beak  Grin but I love it that Fitty's tip panned out for you.

Kazza,

If only I could answer 'yes'!   I have not had a reply to my letter of November and am wondering if I should leave well alone or give him a gentle nudge!   It took him ages to reply to my first letter so maybe I'll try to remember that patience is a virtue!

Forever Searching

 Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Good luck Jill - I hope you get some comeback on this.  It would be great.

Unlike my mother's experience in the '60's when she found the grandson of her lost uncle working as a partner in a law firm in Manchester.  She immediately rang him, full of excitement, but was devastated when he put the 'phone down on her - needles to say, she never tried to find anyone again.

Huh Huh

Thanks for your good wishes Mobo.

What a nasty experience for your mother, and such a shame it put her off searching again.   One does have to be fairly thick skinned in the family history business I think!
