We know that Julius came to London in June 1852 on board Countess of Lonsdale from Hamburg. His occupation was brass finisher.
In 1881 he says he was from Germany.
He was married in 1857, but only gives his father's name as John.
The name might have been changed.
We would like to know where in Germany (or Prussia) he came from.
Many thanks!

Hi "WORNAST searcher",
here are a couple of tips, where to look . . .
The first place to look is the TNA at Kew, to see if your ancestors were naturalised. see Topic: RootsChat Topics - Naturalisation and Internment http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,157691.0.html forget that one, just seen the last post
this site gives a lot of links to various passenger lists, some for Europe, but most to the USA. Might be worth looking to see if he is listed somewhere. http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/ei.html
Good luck, Bob

A quick note to keep in mind for later.
On the IGI (although this is incomplete) there are various births and marriages for Wornasts and they all seem to come from - Vital, Aachen Stadt, Rheinland, Preussen. Sadly no Julius.

Doesn't help with the original query but there is an inquest report in "The Times" 31 Dec 1883 for Adolph Edgar (age 21 pastrycook) who drowned in "The Thames" near Chelsea. Mother Eliza WORNAST of 22 Latchmere Road, Battersea.

This may help later, when you have more information.
a search for WORNAST on the genealogienetz (the biggest german gen. site) http://www.genealogienetz.de/ more specifically, here http://meta.genealogy.net/ brings up a WORNAST researcher from Neumark in (present-day) Poland, then Prussia.
You can contact him through the site, but, probably better, when you have some more details.

The other thing to think about (as I've had to with my German ancestors) is, if they were Lutheran then one of the main centres of German Lutheran life in london was the German Lutheran Church in Alie Street. The records are kept at the Tower Hamlets Archives and may be a route of investigation. I have seen the records (without success for my lot!) and they may be worth checking.

They are generally very helpful.

hello everyone, I am the person who went to get help and advice from BBC radio Gloucs on Saturday and was lucky enough to talk to "Arranroots" who posted this message about my great grandfather Julius Wornast. I am very grateful to you all for the help and information that you have given me and would welcome any further help you can offer. I have now registered with Rootschat as DODO1 but must tell you I am not great on a computer so I may take a while to get used to this facility so please bare with me. Thanks again; bye for now.
