culton who worked for midland railways
« on: Sunday 15 October 06 05:06 BST (UK) »

I am looking William Culton's brother who migrated from Ireland in the mid to late 1800s who worked for the Midland Railways. He corresponded with the Australian relatives till probably around 1920s. He came from Tyrone and his parents were William Culton and Ellen Maclean.
Would appreciate any help

Would you have any more info on him -- his first name, about when he was born, where he lived?

I think he was born around Caledon, possibly around the 1840s or 50s. He was living in the United States in 1903 and may have spent some time in Canada before that. In 1914 he send my grandparents a spoon marked Ft. Dearborn 1830 and Chicago. Unfortunately he may have bought it on a holiday.

I am guessing but the names  James, David , John, Roland, Charles are repeated in both my g.grandfather's and his uncles families.
It may be family hearsay but my aunt says that ? Culton was a boss of the railways.
I hope that this may be of some help.

i have just found some information in an 1877 newspaper  that my William Culton was the eldest son of William Culton of Dunleith, Illinois. Seems he emigrated to America probably with his family. My william came to Australia around 1863 and his grandmother and the rest of her family came to australia in the late 1850s.

You aren't going to believe this, but I think I found him. I found a David Culton who is a locomotive engineer in Cherokee, Cherokee County, Iowa. Here goes:

David Culton, b. July 1851, married 9 years, born Ireland, emigrated 1861, naturalized, locomotion engineer, can read, write, speak English, owns home, it is mortgaged.

Mary M, wife, b. Oct 1855, married 9 years, 4 children, 3 living, born in Illinois, parents born Indiana, she can read and write.

Elva E, dau, b. Jul 1896 in Iowa.

Sherman M Hull, stepson, b. Jul 1878, in Iowa, father born in New York, locomotive fireman, can read and write.

Alice A. Hull, steddaughter, b. July 1883 in Iowa, at school.

I will keep looking if you think this is your guy.

Again my thanks

I haven't found any William Culton in Dunleath, Illinois, or actually one who could fit so far. Do you know anymore info about this William: when he came to the US, was Ellen with him?

Kath,
Until Last week we did not  know William senior was in the US not in Ireland. He may have left Ireland around the same time as the last of Ellen's relatives came to Australia in 1859 as there may have been a political or famine reason to leave. I have a William Coulton coming to Victoria in 1864 but have to look up some more records to see if he was Irish. Otherwise my William may have come via the States. All a guess. Have no idea if Ellen was still alive. Unfortunately many refences we find here only are to male relatives, so I was not surprised that only William's father was mentioned in the marriage notice.

I had another look around and can't find anything that would definitively be him. Here is a link to Jo Daviess County, Illinois, which is where Dunleith is:

http://www.jodaviess.org/

They might possibly have some information, the address for the library or historical society, who might be able to help here.
