Help needed for Beccles
« on: Tuesday 17 October 06 10:18 UTC (UK) »

I am hoping that someone may be able to help me. I have two addresses on my grandmother’s birth certificate. Place of birth 1 Puddingmoor Beccles but residence of her mother being New Market Beccles. Does anyone know what 1 Puddingmoor was in 1908? Also if anyone has information on any Morland's or Langford’s in this area at that time or present I would be very grateful.

Paul.

Hi Paul

Try searching for Puddingmoor on www.streetmap.co.uk  Cheesy
you'll get a result Smiley

I have a couple of birth certs were the birth has taken place at a different address to the birth mother, in both cases it looks as though they have gone back to their mothers' houses to give birth.

Whilst the streets Pudding Moor and New Market are clearly marked today on maps of the town, you may find www.old-maps.co.uk (putting Beccles in the place search) helpful.

They are close by, perhaps baby arrived early whilst visiting family/friends ?
It may have been the home of a 'midwife' ?

Also if anyone has access to the SRO and can check out a copy of White's or Kelly's around the time you are searching, you may find more information.

Unfortunately the latest White's I have at home is 1855 and the oldest Kelly's I have at home is for 1937  Undecided

Hi and thank you both for your posts. I was thinking that she might have given birth while visiting. The address I have them living at is New Market Beccles but I do not have a house name or number are their local records that might record this information. Forgive me for my ignorance but I’m relatively new to this.

Suffolkmawther you mentioned White’s, Kelly’s and SRO could you explain what they are to me please I’m guessing they may be reference books.

I live in Norwich so it is not to far to travel if there are local records that I could view.

Hup tew!

Suffolkmawther you mentioned White’s, Kelly’s and SRO could you explain what they are to me please I’m guessing they may be reference books.

Well, I see yew dew live to the north o' Suffolk in thet little ode place wot we need to alus hev a passport for  Grin

White's - Gazeteer and Directory was published for various counties at various times.  The NRO in Norwich should have copies of the Norfolk ones certainly (they may have Suffolk)

Kelly's is a later directory and includes telephone numbers.

Look out for other directories at the NRO and SRO too.

SRO - Suffolk Record Office

NRO - Norfolk Record Office

Your have that new RO in Norwich which my husband and I have been talking about visiting to do some further research on the very early Brockdish PRs.

The SRO has three branches, at Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft.

All branches have PRs (Parish Records) and Census returns for the whole county, however if you wish to look at bastardy bonds, school log books and other 'village' records you need to go to the RO covering the village/parish.  So it's Ipswich for all of East Suffolk, Bury for all of West Suffolk and Lowestoft for the few parishes in the north east of the county.

I think it would be worth checking the 1901 census (being closest) to see if she gave birth at the home of a relative.

There are some nice old photographs of Beccles at
http://www.francisfrith.com/search/england/suffolk/beccles/beccles.htm

It might be worth contacting the Museum at Beccles to see if they can help you further
http://www.becclesmuseum.org.uk/

Good luck with the search,

Hi Suffolkmawther,

Thank you for the information. When I have some time out I will have to take a trip down to the local reg office for Beccles, though cannot see it being this side of Christmas.

I have searched the 1901 census but have not come up with anything in Beccles. The only information I have that places my Gt. Grandparents in Beccles is my grandmother’s birth certificate. I do believe I have found records with the help from Roots Chat members that place them in other parts of southeast England though Gt grandmother before marriage is a bit sketchy.
