Mean Store, near Leeds
« on: Wednesday 10 November 04 08:41 GMT (UK) »

In an 1861 census transcript, one of my ancestor's children is recorced as having been born at Mean Store near Leeds. Yorks in 1843 GENUKI has no record of such a place and I cannot find any mention in any ofthe usual sources. Perhaps it has some different meaning? In 1840, they were living in Beddern, York which is (as I understand it) a poor house.  Is Mean Store something along the same lines? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Have you had a chance to look at the original ?  It could just be transcribed incorrectly.....

Suggestions ..... Meanwood  or   Menstone

Good suggestion. I'm not sure whether accents might have played a part in this - my gg grandfather (head of the household) was from Norfolk and might have been difficult to understand for a Yorkshire census enumerator. Menston would be a coincidence as one of my maternal uncles used to live there and my cousin used to play for the local cricket team.
