Passenger List from UK to South Africa
« on: Thursday 19 October 06 13:24 BST (UK) »

Hi

Please where can I find the passenger list, I hope they were on ship, from UK to South Africa between 1891 to 1901?

The people I am looking  for are siblings Harry and Edith Dwight of Newington, Surrey. They were orphans and have been schooled at Central London District School around 1891.

Thank you

Try these two websites:

http://sa-passenger-list.za.net/

Cape ships, Huguenots 1683-1756, Natal ships 1845-1858; the tip of the iceberg

Look for passenger lists

New site just come on line www.ancestorsonboard.com.  At present showing 1890 to 1899 outbound UK passenger lists.  I might have found two families of mine who went to SA but there isn't a vast amount of info and some christian names are not even logged on the lists.

The amount of information seems to vary from ship to ship - depends on the clerk, and also seems to depend on the class of ticket. There seems to be more information about occupations for the third class passengers than the  first class ones on some ships. Thankfully mine seem to in steerage! Fabulous colour images. Can't wait for the later data - I've got lots more to find on my list.

UPTON, George - 33  - Mason's Labourer - "Indian Queen" July 1858
  "        , Sarah - 25

  "          Maryanne - 3

Don't know where you are resident but if in london it is worth trying the Maritime museum at Greenwich.

If your'e in CT : If the ship was bound for the Eastern Cape; Algoa Bay we found that our passenger names we wanted were in the newspaper section in CT Library.

Ancestorsonboard now has the records from 1890 through to 1929. If you've got units or a subscription for Find My Past (1837online as was) you can use them for ancestorsonboard passenger lists.

The more recent records give addresses and more details about the people than the earlier records. TNA said the most recent decade wasn't going to be release until August, so they seem to be ahead of schedule.

Roll on the 1940s!

Cheers,

Can anyone tell me please - if I find 'possibles' with the initial free search on Ancestorsonboard (1907 era to Cape Town) what extra information might be supplied if I pay to see transcript/image?

It should give full details of the ship and the voyage (except date of arrival), class of travel, whether travelling with other family, occupation and so on.

Having said this, it depends on the shipping line, the boat, the class of travel onboard and even the captain / purser who had to complete the lists, but it should be very worthwhile... not looking at the image would be a bit like not getting a birth certificate but instead relying on the entry in the birth index.
