Hi I am looking for the surname Watson. Family folklore says that the family were originally shipwrights in Glasgow but moved to Hull for work but even the furthest I have gone back was born in Yorkshire.
First names James b 1850 Hull Herbert b 1878 Arthur b 1876 Charles b 1875
I've also looked in my copies of White's 1851 and Kelly's 1861 & 1897 without any luck.
Usually there is some element of truth in family lore, it's just a matter of getting all the exaggerations out of the way.
Have you traced the Watsons on the various census to see what occupation they had? or maybe obtaining a birth or marriage cert might help as these usually tell you the occupation.
good luck Bee

Yes On the census returns it says various things depending on which year but either shipwright or boatbuilder or boat builder apprentice is next to their name.
I also know my great grandfather named on that list was a shipwright and his son too followed in his footsteps.
I have a rellie born in 1850s who was a shipwright. I'm not sure if that would mean he was included in any directory because most of them were for people who were either self-employed or who had their own companies. My understanding is that a shipwright would be one of many such people in the ship yards. Having said that, if you stumble across a James Carver in any of your searches, I'd love to hear about it.
