Pendergast - in Ballina - c1820
« on: Monday 06 November 06 11:43 UTC (UK) »

Hi All,

Teach me to try and be helpful!!
I said to a friend that I would help her with her the family tree - and what do I find for her - that her GGrandfather came from Ballina - Mayo around 1821

Now - never having had anyone from that side of the water - the Isle of Man being the nearest for my lot - where do I go from here?

I have found Peter and his brother John Pendergast (Prendergast?) on English census records - (they kindly put the town down - not just Ireland!)
Peter was born in 1821 and John 1815 - they are living with his aunt Anne Hooley who was born in "Ireland" in 1775.

Can anyone point me in the right direction - I have seen the Mayo county website (together with their charges for a report!!)

Cheers

Keith

Hi Keith -

As civil registration only began in Ireland in 1864(only Church of Ireland marriages go back to 1845) you would have to rely on parish registers.

You could either write to the parish priest in Ballina(I think it's usual practice to enclose a small donation) or order the registers on fillms through your local LDS. They should also be held at the National Library in Dublin.
However I did 'google' for Ballina parish records and it looks like they only go back to 1823 - you could check with the priest though.  Have a look at this link-it gives the film numbers -

The only thing I can think of is getting the marriage cert for one of the brothers (if they were married in England)and at least you should learn the name and occupation of their father which might help. Maybe there were children born later - after 1823 and you might find them in the records with the same father. Or ther could be other Prendergasts.

There's a marriage on Free BMD for John Prendergast and Tamar Grafton in 1850 in Derbyshire(I had a quick look at the census for names) Is this the right one? If you know the name of Peter's wife you could send for his marriage cert. I wasn't sure whether Jane Prendergast on the 1851 was a wife or niece.

Also on the 1841 there's a Peter 'Pendergast' born about 1816 living with some  Hooleys- maybe they're connected.

Hope this helps in some way. Good Luck!

Regards

Hi Neptune,

Yes, you are correct with all your census finds (well done Wink) - that where I got the Ballina, Mayo, Ireland from - and yes it was only the later census records which say Peter is married to Jane that I realised that the funny squiggle  after nephew, in '41 meant wife!

On the following page in '41 are 2 Grandchildren (to the head) so that also link everyone together.

I have been trying to connect the Hooleys and the Pendergasts - but no luck yet - I presume that Annie was the sister of Peter's father.

I did not realise there were quite so many records in Ireland - I have read on here about the lack of Irish records (a little knowledge is a dangerous thing!) and thought that none were available!

I had not even tried IGI - just shows what a poor Englishman I am!!  Grin Shocked

Will now have another look around.

Once again thanks - and keep an eye out for the next stupid question! Wink

Cheers

Keith
