I would appreciate anyone's thoughts about this please:
This morning I have been happily using my computer to use Rootschat, Ancestry, Free BMD and my email programme. About 15 minutes ago it switched itself into Restart mode.........honestly ........I didn't touch anything.
Once it had restarted I kept getting several "New Hardware" found, in all about 20 different messages for the same item - something to do with Texas Instruments. I went into my Device Manager and there was a huge list under the section 'IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers' all with the yellow exclamation mark
I restarted the PC, checked the Device Manager and they had all gone and everything was OK.......until 5 minutes ago, and it did exactly the same thing again but this time no New Hardware was found
HELP!!

What do you have plugged in externally besides a printer (perhaps), Screen, Keyboard and Mouse ?
Any USB plugs been jarred loose in their sockets ?

Hi ScRoppers
printer (perhaps), Screen, Keyboard and Mouse ?
Got those, plus two speakers, which I have never had any problem with and are working perfectly. I'm listening to music as I type
I can't see any loose USB plugs either.

Hmmmm ... dunno then, something changed - is the PC running hot at all ?
Keep an eye on it, might be early warning of a problem .... certainly get all your data backups up to date !

is the PC running hot at all ? I've just checked and it's cool.....same as normal
I don't know if this is relevant but.......I have Privacy Mantra running which I downloaded (recommended on this site somewhere!!!). After the computer decided to shut down for a second time, I closed Privacy Mantra down and it seems to be workng ok now......there's none of the noise in the background now (the same as you hear when a system scan is running), hope you know what I mean!!!
Last week I ran Privacy Mantra to get rid of the rubbish and the PC didn't work properly afterwards, so restored it to an earlier checkpoint and it was ok.

I'm not familiar with Privacy Mantra, so dont know how it would interface down at the hardware level to cause 'New Device Recognition' !!
The 'noise' during a scan would be your HD seeking & searching across tracks for Folders & Files.
Is there an online Forum for PM Users with hints/tips etc ?
Bottom Line, if removing it has lead to non-return of the symptoms I'd leave it alone !

If Privacy Mantra is not asking you this question the you should uninstall it A.S.A.P.
Have done so!!!!
Since my initial posting the PC is behaving itself....no more re-starts....it seems the blimp has gone
Thank you to everyone for your comments, much appreciated.
