Hi there Pat
Will go and have a look on the 1891 census on line for you in a moment.
With a surname like Smith - could be a wild goose chase
But watch this space

Hi there again Pat
Can anyone find any ifo on Jane Smith born 1881 to Alice maybe Holland & ? Smith in the Liverpool area. Or her parents Alice Smith nee Holland ? or her father ? Smith. Jane married Alexander John Croall in 1905 ?
Just looked on the 1891 census 'on line' for your Jane Smith aged about 10 years, born Liverpool and there are 5 of them. Checked them all out, but only one of those 5 had a mother named Alice
RG 12/ 2961/ Folio 47/ Page 37 – Number 6 Baslow Lane, Kirkdale, Lancashire
SMITH Thomas A, Head, Marr, 33, Van Driver Carrier, born Liverpool Alice H, Wife, Marr, 33, born Kirkdale, Lancs Alfredo, Son, Unm, 12, born Everton, Liverpool Jane, Dau, Unm, 10, born Everton, Liverpool Elizabeth, Dau, Unm, 3, born Kirkdale, Liverpool Amelia, Dau, Unm, 2.12, born Kirkdale, Liverpool SUTTON William, Bro in Law, Unm, 21, Carter, born West Derby, Liverpool, Lancs
Don't know if any of the above info rings any more bells for you, but Alice was probably a SUTTON before she married as it looks as though her brother William is helping husband Thomas with the business of Carrier.
Where did you get the possible 'Holland' info from?

Hi Pat
"Alice's gravestone has the name Alice Holland Smith on it. So wrongly as it now seems, I thought her maiden name may have been Holland."
If they followed protocol, daughters were usually given a midle name relating to the maiden name of their mother - so it was probably grandma Holland (Mums mum) that she was named after.
