He goes 'missing' during this period, leaving behind his wife, Mary, and family. Home address would be Cross Street, Helson. Other members of the family have connections with California, and I think he may have gone to the US for a time.

This is the closest I could find under immigration ship records.. The age seems to be off the 1826 birth year but the rest seems to fit your John...
