Hi Can anyone help with this mystery? I am unable to find the death of Alfred Maynard between the years of 1872 and 1881. He married in 1872 so I know he was alive then!!!!! Then Susannah, his widow, remarried in 1879. He lived in Southwick and Brighton. Any help gratefully received. Suziq

I have looked through the death indexes for every quarter from 1872-1879 (as I am sure you have)
You dont give any age for your Alfred, but the only one in Brighton area in those years is ibn OND 1877 aged 19. This would be too young for someone who had married 5 years earlier!!
The only possibles in these years that I found are:
AMJ 1875 aged 33 in Liverpool area
AMJ 1877 aged 32 in Bethnal Green area.
so it looked as if he either moved away from the area and moved back, or else, (more likely) happened to be away from home (for work? what did he do? or visiting rellies?) when he died.
If either of these tie in with the age of your Alfred then it might be work getting the cert. Or trying to find out more about him to ascertain if he had links in either of these areas.

Hi Liz Thanks for looking for me. I think it's more likely to be the Liverpool one. The 1871 census says he was 30 and a mariner, I think there is more likely hood of him being there working than Bethnal Green. He was born in Sussex so there isn't an obvious reason for him being away other than work. The only thing against that is a child who was born in 1876 and given his surname. Think I might have to get that birth cert. She was born O/N/D quarter 1876. Many thanks Suziq

Hmmmmm..... the existance of the child, if his, could rule that one out! And presumably there are no reasons to doubt she is his. Perhaps if the pennies allow, then getting her cert is a good idea. One other idea is that the age in the indexes for the Brighton death is wrong. Unlikley, but anything is always possible!
I agree that the Liverpool one is more likely if he was a Mariner. Have you managed to find where he sailed to at all? Some of my ancestors were mariners who sailed from Littlehampton, esp one who was a Master Mariner. The Sussex Record Office has some ships records which remian, though they are patchy, and we did manage to find a bit about some of his trips - he went mainly to and from Sunderland to transport coal.

And so it goes on............. I have received the birth cert for Lily Ada born in 1876 and it gives no name or occupation for the father but in the name section her name is given as Lily Ada Boniface so I think it's fairly safe to say she's not Alfred's daughter. I also got the Liverpool death cert and that gives the occupation as book closer and also his mother was present so tend to think that he's not our boy!!!!!!!!!!! Still no closer except to thinking my gg grandmother could have been a bigamist Any ideas anyone Many thanks Suziq
