Please can any one tell me what "Keepers of the Lamp of the Blessed Mary in the church of St. Lawrence of Appleby" are.
Also what are Burghers and mercers which are in the same article from Appleby in the 1450's.

Churches has a "Sanctuary Lamp" that hung in the knave and was kept alight all the time.
The lampkeeper would of course be charged with tenidng the flame and keeping it going.

The Burgers were the town councillors, the mercers were emrchants.
