1841-71 Census - Richardson of Saffron Walden
« on: Thursday 11 November 04 03:50 GMT (UK) »

Is there a kind soul out there that can help me find Thomas Richardson born 1829 on the 1851 census in Saffron Walden, and if possible on the 1841 too?  He was the son of William and Ann Richardson, and was probably still living with them, as he didn’t get married until 1860 by which time he had moved down to London.

I would also like to trace his parents William and Ann Richardson – don’t know their ages but they married in 1818. I haven’t traced them on any census yet and don’t know when they died, so I’d be grateful for any year. From what I know both father and son were labourers.

Thanks,
Ray

Hi Ray,
Quite a LOT of Richardson, here are the Thomas around the right age in 1851
Saffron Walden (HO107/1786):
RICHARDSON THOMAS 20 SAFFRON WALDEN   ESS   417   SFW
RICHARDSON THOMAS 21 LITTLE SAMPFORD   ESS   648   GSP
There are too many William and Ann/e to list really.
Nne on same page as either of the above.
I looked at 1841 but there are so many it isn't easy!
These are the nearest I could see, but no Thomas!
Gold St William Richardson 40  Maltster
Gold St Susannah Richardson  40
Gold St Caroline Richardson  15
Gold St Ann Richardson  14
Gold St Emma Richardson  12
Gold St James Richardson 9
Gold St Matilda Richardson  5

Possible marriage from Boyd's?
Writtle William Richardson Hannah Finch Clewar  27-Jul 1824
Will look again later when I have some more time,
Geoff.

Thanks for looking at that Geoff.  Nothing very definite there, but I'm not really sure when he migrated to London, so its not easy.

I think that marriage from Boyds is a little too early, but I might even get that far back and find it useful, you never know!

Ray

As stated by Geoff, their are Richardson's galore in Saffron Walden but not (as yet) Thomas, son of William and Ann.
I'm looking manually at the 3 folios concerned, iv'e been through the first one and 64 pages of 71 of the second when my disc (or Adobe) has started playing me up, and i'm getting tired!
Will have a look in the next couple of days, send me a reminder if you haven't heard in a couple of days!

Regards

Hi Ray,  Cheesy

From what Bryant has sent, here they are in 1851:
RICHARDSON WILLIAM 55   SAFFRON WALDEN   ESS   489   SFW
RICHARDSON ANN        54   WIMBISH                   ESS   489   SFW
RICHARDSON SOPHIA   18   SAFFRON WALDEN   ESS   489   SFW
RICHARDSON STEPHEN 17   SAFFRON WALDEN   ESS   489   SFW
RICHARDSON SUSAN    14   SAFFRON WALDEN   ESS   489   SFW
RICHARDSON WILLIAM 12   SAFFRON WALDEN   ESS   489   SFW
RICHARDSON ALBERT     9   SAFFRON WALDEN   ESS   489   SFW
The ages are all over the place, but the names all tally. Please remember that 1841 ages are +/-5yrs!
Could this be Samuel with his family?
RICHARDSON SAMUEL   25   SAFFRON WALDEN   ESS   404   SFW
RICHARDSON ELIZABETH 26   NEWPORT    ESS   404   SFW
RICHARDSON SARAH       3   SAFFRON WALDEN   ESS   404   SFW
RICHARDSON ELIZA          2   SAFFRON WALDEN   ESS   404   SFW
And these are the Thomas possibles?
RICHARDSON THOMAS   20   SAFFRON WALDEN   ESS   417   SFW
RICHARDSON THOMAS   21   LITTLE SAMPFORD   ESS   648   GSP
but I don't think it is either of them from the people they are with!
Good luck,
Geoff.

From 1861 Saffron Walden index:
RICHARDSON WILLIAM 63 1122 116   SFW
RICHARDSON SUSAN    24 1122 116   SFW
RICHARDSON ALBERT   19 1122 116   SFW
I think Ann may have died, or be elsewhere, as she is NOT on this index.
Something tells me that William REALLY had no idea of his age! Quite common back then.
RICHARDSON SAMUEL      35    1122   98   SFW
RICHARDSON ELIZABETH 35    1122   98   SFW
RICHARDSON SARAH A     13    1122   98   SFW
RICHARDSON ELIZA           11    1122   98   SFW
RICHARDSON HENRY         9   1122   98   SFW
RICHARDSON EMMA            5   1122   98   SFW
Think they may be correct Samuel family as eldest daughter is Sarah A (Ann?).
This might be William?
RICHARDSON WILLIAM   23      1122   19   SFW
RICHARDSON EMMA   22      1122   19   SFW
RICHARDSON MINNIE   2      1122   19   SFW
Again only the two possible Thomas:
RICHARDSON   THOMAS   29      1123   118   LSP
RICHARDSON   THOMAS   27      1121   18   GCS
Pretty sure they're not right?

Well done Bryant for all that eyestrain searching!!!

Geoff.
