Hilda Bass was born 1918 Reg. Hemel Hempstead. Her mothers maiden name was Florence Hilda Baldry born Bungay Suffolk. I am looking for the marriage of Florence to a Mr. Bass. but regret that I am only guessing that they were married in the Hemel Hempstead area. Can anyone help please.
Regards Bandy

Welcome Bandy!
To find this marriage you will need to go through the complete GRO indexes. These can be searched at Ancestry.co.uk - free of charge. You will need to go through the indexes quarter year by quarter year, just as you would at a Record Office. If you do not have broadband, the images may take a while to load.
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx
The partially transcribed index (freebmd) can also be searched on the same website or at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com
Copy certificates can be obtained online at www.gro.gov.uk

Hi Bandy
Unless you happen to get lucky and manage to link up with a family member who has this knowledge, I'm afraid that this is really the only way.
The only other alternative would be to go through the microfilm records at HALS, but you would need a definite parish. Parish Records post 1837, contain a fascimile of the marriage certificate.

Hilda's birth is in J/A/S qtr 1918, Hemel Hemstead area, ref 3a 1206 - you may already have that - but getting her birth cert would at least give a christian name for Dad.
Any idea if she had older siblings? - might narrow down expected year of marriage.

Looked at marriages 1912 - 1916, cant find any Florence H Baldry's marrying anyone, yet alone a Bass. (only some Florence M Baldry's).
so, if you havnt got Hilda's birth cert that would be my next move, it may give a clue as to whether her parents were actually married or not, and might give more info on her dad.

Thanks to all of you for the information and for trying to help. Think I will get the birth certificate for Hilda and see if that turns up anything. I have no idea if there were any siblings or not. Valda you are right that is the right Florence Hilda Baldry. Regards Bandy.
