BURTENSHAW - Sussex & Surrey
« on: Saturday 28 October 06 11:54 BST (UK) »

My ggrandmother, Amy BURTENSHAW, b1899 Redhill, Surrey.

My ggrandfather was a Canadian soldier, KIA date unknown, GRANT, unknown if this was his first or last name.

Amy's parent's Philip & Mary A, were hawkers, originally from Horsham, Sussex.

My grandfather's name is Harry Burchell however on his birth certificate he is registered as Harry, no fathers name, mother - Amy Burtenshaw, 14 December 1917, Lyndhurst Cottage, Bramshott, Shottermill R.D.  Farnham sub-district.

It wasn't registered until 11 March 1918...is that normal? I figure Christmas has a little to do with it but what could be other reasons?

Amy later remarries Arthur BURCHELL and my grandfather was married in this name however there was no legal change of name.

Im wondering if there was a place for women to have children, as she was unmarried at the time.

no the gap between birth and registartion is not normal as far as i am aware they had a certain period of time to register the birth if a name wasn't chosen they had to register the birth anyway as infant / male child of and then later reregister it with the change of name.

there were places to go to to have children if they mother was unmarried mostly the chilkd was adopted after this. a lot of these were run by churches. i am not sure if that applied to the years you are talkign about though.

when i get home i will re-read the rules i have for regsitering a baby and let you know further.

If they were travelling people they probably waited until they were near a registry office.  You are lucky they registered it!   Try looking up Lyndhurst Cottage on an earlier census and see if it was a private house or a home of some sort.  Googling it may help.  The birth would probably have been registered earlier if it was a home though.
It was very common to take the name of a stepfather too.  If they married when he was small he may not have realised it was not his dad.
It would be a long shot but if the real father was KIA then he should be on the Commonwealth Graves site.  You could search for every Grant - as first or last name.  You can specify Canadian so that should cut it down.

the late registration of a child's birth to parents who were later married to each other might record a false birth date to conceal illegitimacy. a child born out of wedlock was usually registered under its mothers surname though there was nothing to prevent an informant naming or inventing a father prior to 1875.##until 1874 the district registrars were charged with collecting the informantion about all births within their areas, thereafter the responsibility rested with the parents . in the early years some parents chose whether to have them registered or baptized but not both.
starting in september 1911 the mothers maiden name is recorded in birth indexes making it easier to identify the correct birth record.
births were registered in the area they took place this might not be the parents usual address for example if you livedin Leicester and were visiting family in Brighton when you happened to pop the birth would be registered in Brighton.

Thankyou for taking the time to help.  I have tried a few of the suggestions prior, and have had little success.

Cry Sad as it is, my Grandfather Harry died this morning, at 4.15am.  I guess the knowledge goes with him.

But my search will continue......
