Hello folks,
I'm trying to gather whatever information I can on the family of George Frederick Newbery (Known as Frederick) in the 1881 census, so that I can obtain a copy of his birth certificate. I have a copy of the 1891 census page which puts them at 10, Gillies Street, London and they were still there in 1901. Unfortunately, I cannot interpret his birthplace in the 1891 and he was not at home in the 1901 and I'm hoping the 1881 census will shed some light on it. Anyway, here is what I know of the family from the 1891 census:
10 Gillies Street, London Frederick (George Frederick) Newbery / Head / 34 / Corn Mercahnt's Assistant / Hunts Episcopi (well that's what it looks like) Julia / Wife / 35 //Battersea Arthur (Frederick Arthur) / Son / 12 // Paddington
and the 1901:
1 Whitby Grove Manchester Geo Frederick Newbery / Visitor / 41 / Commercial Traveler / London
10 Gillies Street, London Julia Newbery / Head / 45 // Battersea Arthur / Son / 22 / Merchant's Clerk / Holborn
I cannot find Frederick Arthur's birth cert, George Frederick's birth or marriage certs. So I'm kind of stuck without your help.

I like solving puzzles .
I searched for NEWBURY & variations but no luck. Looking for Frederick (George Frederick) & Arthur (Frederick Arthur) against their birth years also proved difficult.
I looked at the consistent details of Julia. On both census's she lists Battersea as birthplace.
I searched for Julia without specifying a surname. Birthplace Battersea. I looked at Middlesex census first.
This is what I found...

SS!!!!!
That is the most fantastic piece of detective work I've ever seen!
Unbree - bloomin 'eck. If I had a hat I'd have taken it off with a flourish - amazing. I was trying to find them too.

Hell's teeth SS!!!
Little did I know that when I started out on this quest for my roots, that it would prove quite so challenging! Neither did I think that I would have to change my name by deed poll to UNBREE!!!
As it happens, I don't need to do that. It seems that Unbree is not a name that the various index search engines recognise, so it seems that it was a transcriber or enumerator error. Phew!
Anyhoo, many thanks for that incredible and thorough piece of detective work, which now enables me to concentrate the search for my GGrandfather's origins in Somerset, not Hunts or Hants. It seems I owe you a drink or three!!
Thanks Pam for trying!
