Wath, Westmorland - which Parish?
« on: Sunday 29 October 06 10:49 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone tell me which parish would encompass the village of Wath ? I'm not sure if there is anything there these days but on old maps Wath  is equidistant between Kelleth and Newbiggin, approx 4/5 mile SW of Kirkby Stephen - presumably named from the bridge across the Lune at that point.

I have found a relative born Wath c. 1777. She was a Jane but I don't yet know her family name. She married John Oliver and they were living in Southwark in 1802. After John Oliver died in 1811 she married William Folder and she may subsequently have married William's brother Christopher Folder with whom she is living at the time of the 1841 census. Both William and Christopher I believe to be the ones on the IGI who were baptised at St Andrews, Crosby Garrett, just across the fell from Wath, in 1778 and 1785 respectively. Their sister Bridgett Folder b. 1770-1 also lived in London and died a spinster in Lambeth in 1838.

Hi,
If you look on www.sreetmap.co.uk and type in Wath in place name then you will get a village of Wath  Cumbria(City/ Town / Village)or up in the location you have mentioned.

Have now seen an 18th century reference to Wath being part of Ravenstonedale parish back then  ( apparently that's pronounced "Rassendell" -reminds me of the Prisoner of Zenda !)
