Hi ainsley,

Using FreeBMD I found a birth that could be him:

John Allison Mar qtr 1854 Downham  4b  345

I'm not sure if Benwick is covered by the Downham registration district.

If you follow the links through on FreeBMD I think you'll find that Benwick was in North Witchford registration district, so the Downham birth may not be the one you are looking for.

You can check the indexes quarter by quarter yourself free on
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

I can't see him in either 1861 or 1871 which is puzzling but I'll keep looking

Hi Bedfordshire Boy,

Already come to that conclusion myself, can't seem to find any record of his birth or anything on the census myself that he really did come from Cambridgeshire. The earliest that Ive found him is the 1881 census when like I said he'd already moved to Middlesbrough !!

Think John maybe my brickwall of the Allison Family

            Thanx for the input anyway

Hi Ainsley

I think he was from Cambs as in 1891 he gives his birthplace as Benwick again (he is enumerated as John H.P. Allison) and in 1901 it was Cambridge Cambridgeshire.

But I really don't understand why I can't find any Allisons in the area in 1861/71

Think Im goin to have to nip to the registar office some time this week to get John's son Charles Robert's(my grt grandaddy) birth certificate. To get Janes maiden name, and then see if I can find record of John n Janes marriage, just to discover John's father's name!!!
Maybe then I might be able to find him on the census Smiley Not goin to hold my breath though

Hi all  Smiley

I had a look at this yesterday as well - it's really intriguing. Looking at the 1891 image, I wonder if you will agree with me, David - his name actually looks like John Thos to me.

Now just as David I can't find any Allison in the area at all.

The one boy called John born about the right time in Benwick on previous census returns is a John Thomas Savage with an unmarried mother Mary. I have traced Mary in the hope to find a marriage to a Mr Allison at some point,  to no avail   Sad

This is not much use, is it  Tongue

Here's what looks like the marriage between Jane and John:
Dec 1880 Middlesbro 9d 959
Jane Shaw - John Thomas Alison

(we can be fairly sure of Jane's maiden name given that in 1881 John & Jane are with Jane's widowed mother Jane Moor who has children named Shaw. Tracing Jane sr back to 1871, she is married to a Squire Moore and there are 2 stepchildren named Shaw age 10 and 7 in the household. Jane is not at home but given her age, she must have been a Shaw rather than a Moor)

Yep, I think you're right Tati - it probably is John Thos., which then fits with the marriage on the GRO index. And the marriage cert has then to be the next step.

Good spot!

Been a while since I was last researching this side of my family, forgot all about it. I went and got the marriage certificate for John and Jane. They were married on Dec 25th 1880 in St Johns Church Middlesbrough. Johns father's name was also John Alison & his proffession is blacksmith. Janes father's name was George Shaw &he was a labourer. Neither father is stated as deceased on marriage certificate, but I know that could just be that they just didnt say they where at time of marriage

I'm still at that brickwall unfortunately, so If anyone can help me break it down or climb over it I'll be greatful

        Thnx Ainsley Cheesy
