1841 Census
« on: Monday 30 October 06 14:40 GMT (UK) »

Hello

Looking for a Charles Lewis b about 1820 (b Compton Bishop), I have found him on the 1881 census living with his son-in-law at Silver Street  Middlesex also living with him there is his daughter Sarah Lewis.

He has been found on the 1851 census living with his wife Elizabeth and daughter Amelia in Bathford Somerset (b Cross), on the 1861 living at Lyncombe  Somerset (b bath) with his daughters Sarah and Ellen Lewis, his sister Eliza Lewis and his dad Charles Lewis (b 1801).  On the 1871 census he is with his son-in-law and family living in Middlesex (b Bath).

Many thanks

Hello Mary

Thank you very much for the 1841 census details of a Charles Lewis living with his parents James and Elizabeth Lewis.

I am trying to establish whether this one is the same one that has been found on the other censuses, it looked like it could have been until on the 1861 census there was found a Charles Lewis (b 1801) stated as being 'father' to householder Charles Lewis (b 1820).

Talk about upsetting the apple cart!

This was the only Charles listed in Compton Bishop and so obviously he seemed to fit.

The father Charles in the later census may be correct or alternatively I agree with your keeping an open mind at present, if one of the children for example, gave the details to the enumerator who was trying to write relationships to the head of the family and who asked "Name of his father?" then maybe the child answered "Charles" ..... can't say to be certain can we?

Your way forward now is to get their marriage certificate which will make sure once and for all what his father's name was.

I think you are absolutely right the only way to find out is to get the marriage certificate of Charles Lewis and Elizabeth ?   Luckily/hopefully they were married when registration was introduced.

Thank you for your help and advice.

MaryA - why the sarcasm ?  I was merely pointing out that the Charles you found didnt have a father named Charles ....

Hi again Ewan.....

Well, a different PoB in all those census years .....

I wonder if the 'Hampton' one in 1871 is actually Bathampton - Regn district is thus Bath ?

I couldnt get a fix on Cross tho ... and Compton B is in the Axbridge District, Weston Super Mare area.

I think the 1841 conundrum may simply be that he was a 'professional' (as opposed to general domestic) servant (deduced from 1851), and away from his family.

Identifying a marriage isnt straightforward - just looking at the number of Charles & Elizabeths who marry before the birth of Amelia. And if you dont restrict it to Somerset (Elizabeth was born in Middx), theres even more candidates.

Might be an idea to get Amelia's Birth Cert and hence Elizabeth's maiden name and tackle the marriage that way ?

There are 2 Amelias in the right time frame on FreeBMD (couldnt see any more actually on the full Indexes) - and given what we see about her in 1851.61 and 71, I'd say this was her:-

Amelia Lewis
4Q 1847
District - Bath
County - Somerset
Volume - 11
Page - 8

the other was 1849, Williford District and can be seen on the census elsewhere ...

Hope this helps, and apologies for the digression in this thread.

Hi ScRoppers

I have done an 'in depth analysis' of this Charles Lewis now, and I have come to the conclusion that on the 1861 census where a Charles Lewis was found to be living with his wife, children and dad Charles, that the Charles (father) was in fact an uncle to Charles.

James, the dad of a Charles who I am looking for on the 1841, I have just found out had a brother called Charles.  Also Charles the son on the 1861 did have a sister, her name was Elizabeth baptised 1822.  There is an Eliza Lewis with the family on the 1861 census age a little bit out.

Yes, the only way to find out Elizabeth's (wife) surname is to obtain a birth certificate for little Amelia and then to look for a marriage.

Cross is situated between Compton Bishop and Axbridge.

Thank you MaryA and ScRoppers for your help in this, I will let you know the  outcome.
