This was the only Charles listed in Compton Bishop and so obviously he seemed to fit.
The father Charles in the later census may be correct or alternatively I agree with your keeping an open mind at present, if one of the children for example, gave the details to the enumerator who was trying to write relationships to the head of the family and who asked "Name of his father?" then maybe the child answered "Charles" ..... can't say to be certain can we?
Your way forward now is to get their marriage certificate which will make sure once and for all what his father's name was.

MaryA - why the sarcasm ? I was merely pointing out that the Charles you found didnt have a father named Charles ....

Hi again Ewan.....
Well, a different PoB in all those census years .....
I wonder if the 'Hampton' one in 1871 is actually Bathampton - Regn district is thus Bath ?
I couldnt get a fix on Cross tho ... and Compton B is in the Axbridge District, Weston Super Mare area.
I think the 1841 conundrum may simply be that he was a 'professional' (as opposed to general domestic) servant (deduced from 1851), and away from his family.
Identifying a marriage isnt straightforward - just looking at the number of Charles & Elizabeths who marry before the birth of Amelia. And if you dont restrict it to Somerset (Elizabeth was born in Middx), theres even more candidates.
Might be an idea to get Amelia's Birth Cert and hence Elizabeth's maiden name and tackle the marriage that way ?
There are 2 Amelias in the right time frame on FreeBMD (couldnt see any more actually on the full Indexes) - and given what we see about her in 1851.61 and 71, I'd say this was her:-
Amelia Lewis 4Q 1847 District - Bath County - Somerset Volume - 11 Page - 8
the other was 1849, Williford District and can be seen on the census elsewhere ...
Hope this helps, and apologies for the digression in this thread.
