Can anyone help me with information on John Sabiston born September 26, 1844 in Stromness, Orkney Islands?
I am trying to find his parents and siblings.

There seems to be 2 other John SABISTON's born Stromness around the same time-frame (1843) on IGI.
Did your John marry under the jurisdiction of Scotland (on Orkney or the mainland?) If he did and you know who he married, perhaps finding the marriage first - because if it occured after 1855 the marriage should name his father and his mother, with his mother's maiden name.

My John Sabiston left Orkney for Canada when he was about 17 years old.
I noticed one in there one time that was born September 15, 1843 and wondered if he changed his birthdate when he was in Canada with the Hudson's Bay Company.
Perhaps you can eliminate some you know of.

I see the DOB is as provided on the 1901 Manitoba Census - do you have it from any other source? I am guessing he is the one who married Margaret FOLSTER and he died 20 Nov 1918, Saskatchewan - age 76, which puts his YOB as around 1842. The 1906 Census gives him as age 65, which is YOB 1841.

The IGI has the marriage of John SABISTON and Margaret CRELMAN
25 OCT 1838 Stromness, Orkney
And they are the parents of the 15 Sep 1843 birth you mention.
It would be interesting to know where parents names names came from, per the web-page contact.

I have the date of birth also from the Hudson's Bay Company where he started work in 1862 as September 26, 1844.
He married Margaret Folster and he died in Saskatchewan and they are both buried there.
I can only guess that his birth date must be incorrect and he was born September 15, 1843 and he is the son of John Sabiston and Margaret Creelman.

If you are able to confirm these were his parents, this may be useful:
IGI births to John SABISTON & Margaret CRE(E)LMAN
Helen - Aug 1839
William - Jul 1841
John - Sep 1843
Margaret Ann - Aug 1848
This looks like Margaret in 1841 with her first child Hellen, and possibly a sister. Relationships not stated in UK 1841 Census, and ages rounded down.

ADDRESS: Stromness
In the household are:
Ann LOUTITT 60 - Y
Janet LOUTITT 40,. Straw Plaiter - Y
Robert LOUTITT 25 - Mer S - Y (I am guessing Merchant Seaman???)
Mary CRULMAN 25, Straw Bonnet Maker - Y
Margaret CRULMAN 25, Straw Plaiting - Y
Helen SABISTON - Y No age - probably a baby under 12mths old.

It was common to see married women in Scotland census using their maiden name - as a surname or as a middle name, and also for a widow to revert to her maiden name.

That posting in Cursiter is mine I was hoping someone might have some answers for me in the guestlog. I have the kids of John and Margaret Creelman and the more I look at it, it would seem that it is the right John who didn't remember his actual birth date when he was in Canada or lied to get employment with the Hundson's Bay Company. You mentioned 2 other John Sabiston's born in Stromness around the same time, are their dates close to what I have for our John? Any info on the parents and siblings?

PS: I have Margaret Ann as dieing on December 29, 1858 meaning she died at almost 10 years of age.

I noticed I have John born August 13, 1814 and Margaret Creelman born Bef. October 24, 1813 in Stromness which I found on an Orkney site.
I often wonder how close these census people actually get the information correctly.
