I have a photo taken at Willowbank c1915 which shows my ancestors standing in front of a shop .which has the name

F.S. HARDWICK

CASH BUTCHERY

I know they lived around Christchurch area but I looked in the AA Atlas and found a place  called Willowbank near Gore.
Perhaps someone has an Electoral Roll or some other way of identifying these people and the area.
Their [img][/img]names were Frederick Sloper HARDWICK Florence Mary HARDWICK

I have a disc of our topographic maps. There are some 19 localities described as Willowbank. 17 of these are homesteads and eight of them are in Canterbury, both north and south. Your people might have come from one of these though it is hard to imagine a homestead with a butchery. I notice on Archway that  Frederick Sloper Hardwick served in the first world war and you can get his record from Archives. It will list his address, parents, next of kin etc. Might be worth a try. There is no sign of him on 1893 rolls.

Hi ,

Dont know if this will help much, but there is a Willowbank Reserve in CHCH, I wonder if the area was known in the past as Willowbank ? Perhaps this is how the  owners of 30 years, named the reserve ?

Also another thought was to check out papers past, in the areas you think may be correct and see if they advertised, the butchery at all. It may give an address.

Do you know where Frederick married, if in NZ, he may have established his business in the same area.

Cheers

You used the date 1915 so I looked at the 1915 City Council Electoral Roll. Frederick Sloper Hardwick is listed there as a Motor Driver living at North Avon Road, St Albans. No sign of Florence. Both were missing from the 1913 Roll so I checked that of 1911and found Frederick Sloper Hardwick a butcher of 130 Antigua St and also Florence Hardwick a housewife of 130 Antigua St.

As a back-up I checked the Wises Directory of the same period. In 1914 Fredk Hardwick is listed as a Taxicab Driver at 47 North Avon Rd St Albans and in 1911 an F S Hardwick is listed as butcher at 1 Burns St Sydenham. There were no entries for 1910 and 1912.

There is clearly no doubt that therefore they lived in Christchurch prior to his service during WW1 and that his butchering took place before the 1915 date you mentioned. The photo seems more likely to have come from the period before 1911 and may well have been taken in the southern Christchurch area, perhaps Antigua St. Why on earth it would be called Willowbank escapes me.
