McDowall in Kirkcolm
« on: Friday 31 July 09 07:55 UTC (UK) »

My partner's great-grandmother was Mary McDowall born in 1868 in Kirkcolm, Wigtownshire. She married Samuel McLachlan in Liverpoool in 1886.

Margaret's father was Robert McDowall born on 17 Jan 1831 in Kirkcolm and married Sarah Crillie on 14 Feb 1862 in Kirkcolm. In 1881 Robert and Sarah and family lived at 13 Duncan St, Liverpool:

- Robert MC DOWALL, Head, 49, b.Wigtown, Scotland, Mariner
- Sarah MC DOWALL, Wife, 48, b.Wigtown
- Mary MC DOWALL, Dau, 14, b.Wigtown
- Robert MC DOWALL, Son, 11, b.Wigtown
- John MC DOWALL, Brother, 52, Wigtown, Mariner
- John ABROOK, Boarder, U, 27, b.Liverpool, Carpenter (Ship)

Robert's father was John McDowall born in 1792 in Kirkcolm and married Mary Nelson about 1820.

(John had a brother Archibald McDowall who married Janet Agnew. Archibald was a merchant ship master. They had Janet in 1818, Archibald in 1820, James in 1822, John in 1825, and Jean in 1827 - all born in Stewarton, Kirkcolm.)

John McDowall and Mary (nee Nelson) had seven children:
- Mary
- Alexander
- John
- David
- Andrew
- Robert
- Rosanna

John's parents were Archibald McDowall and Rosanna Cummings. Archibald was b.1766 in Kirkcolm. Rosanna was b.1770 in Inch. They married on 19 Jun 1791 in Kirkcolm. Archibald and Rosanna had:

1. John McDowall c.30 MAY 1792 in Kirkcolm
2. Archibald McDowall c.24 AUG 1794 in Kirkcolm
3. Helen McDowall c.5 JUN 1797 in Kirkcolm
4. Andrew McDowall c.22 JUN 1799 in Kirkcolm
5. Janet McDowall c.2 JUL 1801 in Kirkcolm
6. Alexander McDowall c.2 OCT 1804 in Kirkcolm
7. Margaret McDowall c.22 DEC 1807 in Kirkcolm
8. Archilbald McDowall c.15 AUG 1809 in Mahar, Inch

Does anyone have a record of who Archibald's parents were?

I presume that was supposed to read Mary, not Margaret?  Wink

From where did you get the year of birth for Archibald as 1766? Were their ages stated on the marriage entry or is this calculated from census data?

I don't know if you are familiar with the Wigtownshire Pages website.
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~leighann/wfp/deaths/15.html

There are a few McDouall/McDowalls deaths listed in the Wigtownshire Free Press, some of whom are in Kirkcolm, it is possible that they could be the family you are looking for.

There is also an entry (1846) which could correspond to the death of the Archibald ch. 1794 Kirkcolm, but if correct it would mean that the second Archibald you listed (ch. 1809 - but only the father's name given on the IGI extracted entry) would not belong to this family.

I would suggest posting a lookup for MIs if you have not already done so. They can sometimes be the only link that remains if parish records do not.

Kirsty

Edit: Sorry Simon, I see that you already have Smiley
