JOSEPH TATE of LEEDS
« on: Friday 12 November 04 13:56 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to trace Joseph Tate b abt 1830 from Leeds who married ELIZABETH MURCUTT at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London on the 24 June 1849.
They had 6 children that I know of.

Thomas Murcutt William
Elizabeth Ann
Joseph Murcutt
Emily Louisa
William Murcutt
Henry Murcutt

From Joseph’s wedding certificate his father’s name was William Tate a tailor.

In all the censuses I have 1851 to 1901 they all state that he was born in Leeds but no other details.

I know this is a very slim chance, but is there anybody who has a link to JOSEPH?

Or if anyone could advise me on what my next move should be to make any headway, any help would be very much appreciated

My link with this tree is Joseph Murcutt Tate, and I have quite a few names which I am more then willing to share.

Best regards,

Colin

OK, Silly question. (Maybe- I don't think we are related)

was that specifically Leeds, York, or could it have been the Kent one?

Hi Pauline

It,s Leeds Yorkshire, which makes it all the more difficult because of the size of the place!!!

Hi,
Nothing to do with your question but I noted your site name and as I have several Tates in my tree I thought you might be interested.

William b. 1824 Lockwood, Huddersfield
Tom b. 1852 Lockwood m Mary Ann Hodgson and had 14 children including my gran.
Some movement to Norfolk and back to Bradford

Hi Dave,
Sorry for the delay in answering you I have only just spotted your reply.

I have just found a possible link of a  first marriage in  Durham, South Shields which I am trying to confirm. So it appears that he (or his family) did move about a bit, and Bradford isn't to far from Leeds is it?

I know were he was in 1849 but not before, I believe he was born about 1829 but even that is unclear as the further you go back the harder it gets to find any information ,so any names you my have that could possibly help would be very helpful.

Best regards

Colin.

Colin,

I am interested in the MURCUTTS you have. According to Ancestry 19 families of MURCOTT/MURCUTTs lived in London at the tiem I haev been researching.
I have an interesting one in that one of my important ancestors lived for a long time with a Mary MURCUTT, baker, in Gloucester. Mary died in 1788 and I have a copy of her will in which she leaves everything to my Maria CLARKE (nee Browne - which was supposed ot be a pseudonym). Mary's sister William MURCUTT was a freeman of Gloucester and employed apprentices in his cabinet makign business. He left everythign in his will to his sister Mary in trust for Maria!!!   So your later MURCUTTS coudl be related. Its sufficiently rare enough to link.  Would be interested in tracing yours back further and see where they came from, as I do not know where my Mary or William originated.

Hi Amanda

I don't have a lot on the Murrcutt's I'm afraid, all I can tell you is that Elizabeth Murcutt married Joseph Tate in 1849 at St Martins in the Fields and died in 1908 aged 79. Her parents were Thomas Murcutt and Elizabeth Sarah Bristol Marshall and she had a sister Ann born in 1828.

The 1861 census has Thomas Murcutt  (Aged 65) at 2 Wild St Court as a  Boot Maker

that sums up that I have.

Hope it is of some use to you.

I thought that i had sent you a reply  re Tate but i do not see it here which is good because it was awfully stupid and i wanted to apologize  Since i am getting a second chance , here is what i know, as per family story Mary SNOWDON of South Shields, Newcastle , dau. of John SNOWDON, shipwright and Mary Ann BIDDLESTONE  or BITTLESON  had a dau Mary b c1816 who married George Alexander TATE Her sister Ann married Samuel Farrar of Leeds, a draper Tjhey had no Children and he married 2 Alice? Ann was known as "Aunt Tate and considered a bit of a gorgon.  2Rootschatters  "Manchester Rambler"    and' DS" helped me sort the farrars a bit . All the Web, a search engine , using Samuel Farrar led me to the Stead family and Farrars to 1970 if it helps...
