Hi there,
The last 2 children were born in South Africa, Transvaal ( the province) and Johannesburg ( the city)
It is very difficult to find any records of births around this time. Did the family return to SA at all?
thanks
Ruth

Not that I know of.

We have family in South Africa today but a different branch of this line.

These are the first that I have found who left the UK.

1911 census would probably tell me more but I will have to wait for that information.

Hello Rowdy,

I'm not quite sure what you are looking for, but you may at least be able to obtain baptismal certificates.

My great-grandparents left England with two young children in 1881. They settled in Pietermaritzburg where my grandfather and three other siblings were born, one of whon died in infancy. I was able to obtain baptismal certs for all four Natal births and a death certificate from the very helpful archivist Mary Gardner (see below).

My family also moved up to Johannesburg in  the early 1890s. However, most of  the family returned to England in early 1896 following the Jameson Raid.

Good luck,

Justin

Natal Diocesan Archives -  (Church of the Province of South Africa ) have most of the CPSA church registers for Natal (not KwaZulu), except those that are currently in use, dating from 1849, the earliest records. They also have a Commissioner of Oaths on the premises. A few registers have been stolen or destroyed by fire, but not many.  They also have registers of churches that are no longer in existence. Registers in their possession are from Durban and Pietermaritzburg and date back to about 1849.
