Change of name/adoption search???

Can anyone tell me if I can get access to records of adoptions in Cumbria?

I have a Lena Reed who I know was born in 1899 and married to become Entwistle in 1918. Her father is stated as Miles Reed on her marriage cert. I can not find her birth certificate. Going to order her death cert (1921) The only Lena on the 1901 census of that age is living with the Reed family of whom Miles is a son aged 22 and single. The Lena in question is the daughter of Mary Ferguson (Widow) formerly Reed and was born in Scotland.
Huh

Wondering if she was adopted by her Uncle??? Long shot but can't think of anything else!

Hi,
   You will not find any official adoption records for this period,  Sad as they did not begin until the 1st January 1927. Before this date most families would have a verbal agreement as to who cared for infants; some children would go to a childless couple within the family.

In your case you need to do more work on Mary Ferguson, you must ask yourself if it is possible that she was married to a Miles (remember names run in families)? Was Lena registered under Ferguson and not Reed (perhaps she just changed her name?)? Was her birth registered in Scotland? Her parents could have gone back their briefly.

Yes, it's quite possible that she was adopted by her uncle or else he just could have been the "stand in father" who gave her away perhaps?

Another thought ............

Is there an address for Lena on the marriage certificate that you can look up in the electoral registers to see who was living there in 1918?

Can any of the marriage witnesses be tracked back to her family?

I can not find her birth in Scotland either. I have however found a Lenia !!Reed born in Cockermouth 1899. This could be her...
I have orded it so will wait and see what it says.

The plot thickens!

Just a thought .............. I assume that you are checking REID, READ and any variant spellings of FERGUSON that you can think of?
