Hi Pat, Many thanks for the web site.
               I should have explained a little better. I am looking for a man,regarding History.
   In the 1911 Irish census an ancester of mine was by this time 78yrs.
          In the house  down as a boarder, was a REV: William Harte. a Catholic Curate. 
             I am interested in William, for at that time there was still turmoil in Bonni:to do with land etc. And my ancester was a retired Estate Bailiff, so I guess he would not be to popular.

 I found out myself about Rev; William Harte the catholic curate.
     If anyone as heard of Bonniconlon in Mayo and Bofield.
   Rev: Harte was responsible for building the old national school in 1890, and the present Bofield school in 1895.

 Hi Chris, Thankyou for getting in touch.  My ancestry is Bonniconlon West Parish Kilgavan Baroney Gallen. From 1803,1834, 1911,and 1901 up untill 1920 my ancesters lived in a place called the Lodge Bonniconlon, some people say it was a Barracks but I am sure it was not.

   I have a census form for 1901 and 1911 in 1911 there was a Catholic Curate liveing as a boarder by the name of William Harte, he came originaly from Sligo]
   he lived with my G/Grandfather John Loftus. JOhn was married to a Anne ?but in 1911 John was a widower.This place the Lodge puzzles me no end,John Grandson was born in the U.S.A. but came to Mayo in 1920 the address he gave is on his passport THe Lodge Bonniconlon, Ballina Mayo.
              I would love to know more of the Lodge, and where in Bonni: it was.

Lep,

I know someone whose ancestors come from that general area, although not from Bonniconlon itself.  During her childhood she spent most of her school holidays in Mayo.  She tells me that there were a lot of Loftus families in the locality.  When I saw your message I asked her about it and she told me that it was possible that your ancestor's home could also have been a barracks because her grandmother (born in the 1880s) often talked about a landlord in the area having pulled out of Ireland and given the use of his house to the British.

Later, I looked at Bonniconlon discussion board (same website as the one containing the photos) and came across a message from a Bonniconlon emigrant to America that more or less confirms the grandmother's story.   My contact knew nothing about that message board when she told me what she had heard from her grandmother, nor does she know any of the people who posted messages there, so unless it is a local fable or the British were gifted two houses in the area, it seems that your ancestral home could have been used as a barracks.

      And no it was not a barracks.Which I knew It could not have been,for I knew it was there in 1958. Smiley
