I think that this might be Gledrid, Carole.
This is a small village in St Martins Parish, North of Oswestry on the Denbighshire/Shropshire border.
From looking through census information for Gledrid, I do recall a family of Merediths living there.
Do you have any further details - names, approx ages, etc.
The map shown here shows Gledrid just south of Chirk:

Hello Gadget.
Yes I think you are right. St Martins features a lot in the census' for the family. The head of the family is Joseph, wife Mary and they have several children including my ancestor George. Joseph moved from Ifton Rhyn to Glenrid, he is there in 1851 and died there in 1891, he also lived in Coke Oven Cottages, which I think sounds lovely, but not sure if they were!

Hi Carole,
I've just checked on the 1881 and it is the same family. I'm not sure about whether the cottages are still there but I will check for you.
This family might possibly be related to another family of Meredith who settled in Chirk. The son - also a William (Billy)- was to become one of the most famous footballers of his era. He played for Manchester Utd, Manchester City and, of course, Wales.
I will check on the cottages and get back to you.
Regards
Gadget
PS They don't seem to be there now - or possibly have been renamed. There has been a lot of house building in the area.

Oh yes - he was born in Chirk in 1874 - I think I mentioned that the family were in Chirk. It's only about a mile away
I do have connections with his family so.....
Where was Joseph born? The Chirk family moved from Trefonen to Chirk just before Billy was born.
His Biography says that the family were originally from Montgomeryshire but because they are only related by marriage, I haven't yet gone further back on them. BM was a friend of my father's father and his mother's brother. They all played football together. He helped my Dad in his early career as a professional footballer in the 1920s.

Thanks for that William.
Melverley is not far from the border. Have you got him back this far Carole?
The IGI have him (probably) as bpt. 27 July 1817, Melverley. Parents Joseph Mansell and Mary Meredith.
It's a patron submission so would need checking.

Thanks for that Gadget. Will read and digest.
Hello William, it's Carole of Mayer family, I havn't got any further with those yet. I am now looking for another family, Merediths of which I have much more info and am directly descended. You set me off with Cefn Mawr, do you remember?

Hi Carole,I know who it is,and when you first mentioned the Meredith Surname and the location,I also thought as Gadget did of the Family of Billy Meredith who is quite arguably the greatest Welsh Footballer of all time. However when I looked the first time on the IGI,,and again with the usual health warning for patron submissions,it appears they are from two separate Families.

Now Carole, let's just get one thing straight, shall we
William will tell you, Chirk is the centre of the universe not Cefn Mawr as far as I'm concerned.
There were major bus jams because the main street of Cefn was very narrow and Crossville timetabling managed to get the Wrexham-Oswestry bus passing the Chester- Llangollen bus in Cefn
If you like, I'll adopt you as my cousin and you can then say that you are related to the great BW by marriage
There might possibly be a link very far back but it would take some checking.
I go out of my way to help any Man Utd fans - ask joe

Yes Gadget the main street in Cefn is hardly wide enough for one bus let alone two.It seems we are all Man Utd fans here though!
