Hi Acky  Smiley

I was just browsing through the unanswered posts and cam across yours.

It's very possible that Offen is the surname of your wife's Great Grandfather. It was very normal to use the father's surname as a middle name with illigtimate children - possibly sometimes for the *name and shame* value  Wink

However, it's unlikely that you will be able to prove this.  Huh

Have you tried looking for Offen's living near Eliza Gough on the 1871 census? It might just throw a few idea's out there  Smiley

Kind Regards

Hi Jo......many thanks for your reply re the name of Offen....actually we had thought that it just have a connection with the biological father . We must try and see if the name appears in the 1871 census for Buckingham shire
