Hiya Joe,
Did you notice that William McGourlick was the only person with that surname in Ireland at the time of the Valuation? I looked in Irish Ancestors Surname Search as I feel the name may well have been spelt incorrectly prior to William's time. That Search is based on the Valuation but there was no mention of the surname there. This one could prove to be like looking for the proverbial "needle in a haystack"
I'm guessing McGourlick is an Anglicised version of an Irish name or a Scots name. You may need someone with a smattering of the Gaelic to tell you what the original name may have been. I'll do my best though and go for Gourley and McGourley as I'm not one hundred percent happy about that "lick"
There was one McGourley in Donegal, again the only one in Ireland, at the time of the Valuation....
Charles McGourley, Drumnaha, Clonleigh. Donegal.
There were no McGourlicks in the street directory of 1852.
I feel I'm safe in saying that there is a fairly close connection between Charles and William.
I hope I'm not leading you in the wrong direction with this theory.

Hei, Joe, I've spotted a Margaret Anne McGourlick of Johnstone. She posted a message on celticfc.net 
I don't know how how many McGourlicks you require. Should we look for as many as possible since there
were so few in Ireland? I think it might not be a bad idea .. what took them to Ireland for instance? Here's
one suggestion .. in the early 1800s Neil McCourt married Sarah McGourlick. They then reared their family somewhere in Co. Fermanagh between 1811-1827. I wonder if Sarah's relatives came to live in Ireland too.
It's a great pity there are no passenger lists for voyages between Ireland and Britain. Have you any old tin boxes full of goodness knows what? It's amazing the things people keep.
Right, I knew there had to be variations on the name .. here they are .. McGorlick, McGourlick and McGoldrick ... that will do for starters. We may find a few more variations. If a Gaelic speaker sees these posts we may get some more. I think I received a PM some time ago from a lassie who speaks Gaelic. Certainly she spelt her name in that language although she wrote to me in English.
Ellen (of one of the spelling variations), born in Co. Fermanagh in 1923, married John Sheridan b 1816? at Pettigo on 20th July 1865. Pettigo is on the Fermanagh/Donegal border. Half in one county..half in the other.

Do you think you could interest Brian McGourlick of Barrhead in Family History as well as the Panto auditions in which he participates at the moment, Joe? Chelsea Cunningham might be interested too. If you can persuade them then RootsChat would have two new members.

No McCuarligs, Joe.
I tried McCurley as it sounds similar ... no luck there however if you drop the Mc you'll discover lots of Curleys.

Hi folks
An intriguing surname isn't it. I found some in Lanarkshire, Scotland while tracing back my female line. They seem to use Gourlay as well as McGourlick/McGourlic.
Here's what I have so far:
Francis McGourlick, died 1899 at the age of 74 (Newton, Parish of Cambuslang), which if his age is correct then he must've been born around 1825, probably in Ireland.
His parents were Thomas McGourlick & Helen McGourlick (maiden name - Walsh). More than that I don't know.
Francis and his wife appear earlier in their daughter Helens marriage cert. (Rutherglen 1876) as Francis & Isabella Gourlay.
I'd gotten stuck tracing back the Gourlays until I noticed a witness at the wedding called Janet McGourlic. So it wasn't hard to put two and two together!
I wonder if some of the above changeable surname stuff is down to the unfortunate toxic religious prejudices which existed back then (and still do to an extent in the west of Scotland).
When I searched for these records a while back I scribbled down a few notes that might be useful to somebody. A free search on GROS revealed:
McGourlick - none recorded in Scotland before 1855.
In 1855 - 2 births/christenings
1856 - 5 births/christenings
1857 - 2 births/christenings & 3 deaths
1858 - 3 births/christenings, 1 marriage, 4 deaths
1859 - 5 births/christenings, 1 marriage, 3 deaths
1860 - 3 births/christenings, 2 marriages, 1 death
McGorlick - none recorded in Scotland before 1855.
1855 - 2 marriages, 1 death.
