Hi, I'm really struggling to find this ancestor...I've only just found out about him and I know nothing about the place he came from. His name was Thomas Smith born abt 1813 from Bilston his father was John Smith. I found a Thomas Smith born to John and Sarah in 1813 on Familysearch but I don't know anything about his parents after that. Could anyone find his Baptism transcript and his parents' wedding transcript please? Thomas states on one census that he would have been born in 1816 so I might have found the wrong person on Familysearch. If anyone could find any information I would be most grateful.

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone could do a lookup on any of the census for any John and Sarah Smith's living in Bilston, both born around 1790? Many thanks.

Burto, with a name like Smith you need to do a lot of searching, like Parish Records etc. Not everyone is on the IGI Family Search, not everyone was baptised. Good luck from mrswoman.

Hi Burto
It is quite common for ages to vary a year or two (or more) on census information. In addition, was the 1816 record from the 1841 census? In 1841 age was rounded down to the closest 5 years for adults, so somone born in 1813 would be recorded as 25, giving a year of 1816 for the birth year.
Where did your original information for Thomas Smith come from? Was it his marriage certificate? When and where did he marry? Do you have him on later census records. Did he call any of his children John or Sarah? This may help determine if the baptism you found is the correct one. The IGI entry is a submitted entry - NOT extracted from church records, which makes it only as reliable as the research of the submitter, which is unknown. It does, however have an exact date, which tends to indicate it was not estimated from, for example, census data.

Hi, Well this is what information I have: My ancestor, Selina Smith was born in Mansfield to Thomas and Ann Smith. Thomas Smith married Ann Hingley in 1838 in Derby, his father's name John. On the 1851 census Thomas and his family were living in Duffield (Ann's home town). He is described as being born in Bilston and aged 35, he was a railway labourer. Thomas's first daughter, Sarah Ann, was born in Bilston in 1843. John Thomas Smith, their son was born in Duffield in 1851. Other children were Enoch and Alice if that helps with any of Thomas's sibling's names. In 1841 Ann was living with her parents but her surname was Smith she was listed as being 20. No idea where Thomas was. His burial was in 1866 aged 50. I hope this helps in some way. Many thanks for all your help.

Hi, I just wanted to continue this side of my family after a bit of a break....how do I check that Thomas listed on this thread is actually mine? I also looked on freereg and found that same one, but as people have said it's difficult to know as Smith is such a common surname. As you can see I posted what Trish251 wanted to know about whether any of Thomas' kids were called John or Sarah, and indeed they were. Very stuck and not sure what to do next? Thomas and his family moved around alot.

Hi Burto, none of us can tell you if this is your Thomas Smith, you really have to decided yourself, after researching all the evidence possible, we all have to make these decisions, agree it is even more difficult with Smith, good luck from mrswoman.

The names certainly indicate he could be your man.
As you have found some parish records on the IGI you could hire the film from you nearest LDS centre if you have no access to the original parish records. Looking through the register/film at births burials and marriages (which would all be on the same film if they all came from Bilston) may provide some more clues to confirm it is/is not your family. If the earlier families moved around as well, then it does become much more difficult.

I doubt very much that the PR's if you can find a baptism in there will say anymore than 'Thomas son of John and ? Baptised so and so date.' Not everyone was baptised, or it could have been a Non Conformist Baptism. Was Thomas Married by Banns or License? If it was by License you can search the Marriage Allegation Bonds, and or look at the Land Tax Records for Bilston and see if you can find a John Smith there around 1813. HTH from mrswoman.
