Can anybody help me find the record of the marriage of Thomas Belcher and Hannah Townsend (or Town). I have two possible surnames for Hannah as follows; on the birth certificate of their only child her maiden name is given as Town however on her second marriage in 1848 the surname of her father was given as Townsend. In the 1841 census they were already married and living at Shillingford, Warborough. Thomas Belcher died in 1847 aged 49 at Shillingford. Hannah was born 1804 to 1807 ( depending upon her age in various censuses) and variously gives her place of birth as Warborough or Ascott. Ascott is 2 to 3 miles north of Chipping Norton. Many thanks in anticipation of your help. Regards Brian
Hi Pennie, Thanks for the information. You have confused me slightly, your third line implies that there are no entries for the surname TOWN(E) in Warborough and yet one line above you say that Hannah Town married married at Warborough. Did you mean that there were no entries in Shillingford?
Does the OFHS have a baptism index toidentify when Thomas Belcher and Hannah Town were baptised. Regards Brian
My apologies for the confusion! What I should have said is that I checked for any male entries for TOWN(E) (hoping to possibly find a likely candidate for Hannah's father).
The OFHS do, indeed, have a baptism index and will do a search for you for a nominal charge. The index is about 90% complete and includes Ascott and Warborough (but not Chipping Norton). You can check which other parishes are included/excluded at the "Search Services" section of their website at www.ofhs.org.uk.
Hi Pennie, Many thanks for your response. I will follow up the search facility offered by the OFHS. I presume I would go through the web site rather than yourself.
From looking at the OFHS web site I have just realised that what I assumed was Ascott north of Chipping Norton is infact just over the boarder in Warwickshire and there is a Ascott under Wychwood south of Chipping Norton Regards Brian
