Sorry Trees, I should have said that I already have them, but thanks very much for looking, it's nice to know that someone (maybe) thinks I'm on the right track.

I haven't checked any of them, so it's only guesswork.......what do you think?

That's the problem, when there's a few with the same name.

I haven't included the William/Fanny one, only William & Elizabeth and Joshua and Mary

Hi

Have you tried this website I have always found it a big help when it comes to finding out who was who in (Salkeld) Crosby Ravensworth & Maulds Meaburn a transcript of the Parish Register with all the info the IGI will not give up like which farms or area of the villages they lived on/at

The Parish Registers used to be seperate but are now consolidated into one list still worth a look though with plenty of CR & MM Ellwood/Elwood featured

http://www.btinternet.com/~grigg/

Also Crosby Ravensworth has its own Parish Archive so if you ever visit the village (highly recommended) make enquiries somebody might let you in to look at there various resources

Thanks for that Bill, I have actually looked at the site....and it's really good, especially if you have one of the single names listed, like Curwen or Grigg.

There's that many Ellwoods on...it's difficult to know who's who.

I did find it good for my Fothergills of Mallerstang and Gibsons of Staveley on the 1829 list, although my Fothergills moved to Hawkshead Hall, which is Lancs, but the Gibsons stayed at New Hall, Staveley right through the 1800's.

Thanks again

Thanks Gillian, that's great, I haven't any of the children of Mary and Joshua.

I do have
Joshua Elwood married Mary Lunson at Newton Reigny, Cumberland on 14th May 1758
Mary Lunson was christened at Kirkland, near Penrith, Cumberland 23rd Mar 1722/23

The trouble is...I can't prove that Mary and Joshua are the parents of ..

Son William Elwood was born in 1769 and christened in Crosby Ravensworth, Shap, Westmorland on 17th June 1769, even though it's on IGI, it may not be my William.

In turn......William Ellwood married Elizabeth Mattison in Crosby Ravensworth, Westmorland 6th May 1792

and...Son William Ellwood was born 15th March 1795

then...William Ellwood married Ann Rigg in Crosby Ravensworth on 13th November 1820.

I would love to be able to say 'That's correct'.......but I can't

That's the first time I've seen 'Whitbar' mentioned, where did you get that?

Great I have some more people to look for.......only hope I'm with the right family!!!!!!

Thanks again

Bill....I should have said earlier...I have visited the village and looked around the churchyard.......it's such a nice sleepy place, as is Maulds Meaburn.

Hi Fay,

Maybe the marriage witnesses could shead some light. I'll see what I can find.

I have also unearthed some more children of Joshua Elwood & Mary Lunson:

Mary bap 2/12/1762 Kirkland, bur 14/5/1774 CR,
Isabel bap 23/4/1760 Kirkland,
Anne bap 24/1/1765 Kirkland.

Some time between 1765 & 1769 (baptism of Margaret) Joshua & Mary moved from Kirkland to Whitber CR.

Joshua Elwood, husbandman, is in the 1787 census of Maulds Meaburn with a son & two daughters. Mary his wife had died in 1785. Curiously Joshua is living near William & Fanny Elwood which could suggest a relationship??

Regards,

Gillian

That's great Gillian....thanks ever so much.....it's becoming a little clearer.

I'm saving all this info you're giving me and trying to piece it together......I'm beginning to think that the line I have is right.

William/Fanny probably will be related, William may be Joshua's brother....I wish we had a 1831 detailed census (I'm never happy)......then again...1831 wouldn't really help, would it?

I thought Isabel was a strange name for the family......but William and Ann's son John named one of his children Isabella....so maybe not

All this is greatly appreciated, before this thread goes dead Gillian , I would just like to say a big thankyou to Bill and Trees (great website) and of course you.

Thanks
Fay

Hi Fay,

A bit more information:

The William Elwood 1792 marriage has no witnesses documented.

Great Gillian, those names might help me decide who are the parents of Ann Rigg.......John Rigg and Ann Atkinson married 1796 or Jonathan Rigg and Christian Woof 1797, because I know one family had a son John, as well as a daughter Ann.

Thankyou
Fay

Gillian, where do your Ellwoods come from?

Hi Fay,

I am researching Ellwoods who lived for a time at Blasterfield Crosby Ravensworth. I have:

John Ellwood b1807 Bongate marr 16/12/1840 (Kirkby Stephen) Margaret Richardson nee Paker b1817 Warcop. When first married they lived at Smardale.

Their children are: Mary Ann b1842 KS, Isabella b1844 CR, Elizabeth b 1846 CR, Margaret b CR, John b1851 CR, Thomas Parker b1854 CR, Michael b1856 & William Henry b1861 CR.

William Henry continued to farm at Blasterfield after his father's death in 1884. Margaret Ellwood and her daughters Isabella & Elizabeth moved to Town End Terrace in Orton.

Both John & Margaret were widowed when they married. I have never been able to find a previous marriage for John Ellwood.

John Ellwood's parents are William Ellwood & Ann Simpson married 27/07/1794 St Michael Appleby. William was a farmer like his son John. William & Ann's children are: Mark b1797, Sarah b1798, Thomas 1801, William b1803, Margaret b1809, John b1807 Bongate, Mary b1813, Elizabeth b1815. All were baptised St Michael's.

John's brother Thomas b1801 Bongate lived in Maulds Meaburn at Crabstack. Thomas married Ann Fawcwtt in 1825 and had children: Ann 1831 Lazonby, Sarah 1835 Bolton, William 1836 MM, Margaret 1840 MM, James 1843 MM, Thomas 1846 MM and  Elizabeth 1849 MM.

John and Thomas' father William was baptised Dufton in 1772 son of Mark Ellwood and Ann Loadman. The Ellwood line then goes back to Edward Ellwood and Ellyn born c1550 Dufton.
