That's a shame you can't find previous marriages...you would think Margarets would be easy, with having her married name........

All these Ellwood families must be related somewhere along the line......it's so maddening........I start to get muddled with all my different families because they all seem to come from the same areas.

My Gran, (a Fothergill)....a completely different side of the family was born at the Royal Oak Inn, Bongate.....her father was managing it in 1871...I went up recently to have look......what a nice place Appleby is. (especially the graveyards...lol)

I'm sure you are better at this than me....but I will see what I can find for you.

Hi Fay,

I have Margaret's first marriage to Septimus Richardson. I don't have John Ellwood's first marriage. I have tracked a lot of John Ellwood marriages but have found all the married couples alive & kicking in the 1841/51 census!!!

I know Appleby quite well. My mum was born in Crosby Ravensworth and I spent my holidays as a child there with my grandparents. I have seen the CR archive but have not been in it yet. It's fairly new.

There are a lot of Ellwoods out there. A lot of them trace back to the Dufton line. Have you had a look at Bruce Morrison's Ellwood website? Try googling Ellwood genealogy for the web address. This site gives lots of detail about the Ellwoods of Dufton.

Regards,

Gillian

Hi
Sorry - I haven't really read your thread closely.  It's just that any mention of CR catches my eye.

Have you looked at any wills?  There is a will for William Ellwood farmer of Littlebeck with probate date 1820.  If you haven't already seen it, then you can order it from Carlisle Record Office.  There are also wills for several CR Riggs between 1806 and 1848 - of Blasterfield and elsewhere.  Let me know if you want details.

Thankyou for that Deborah....I haven't seen any Wills around that date.

I did find Ellwood wills 1698 Applethwaite, 1719 Kirby, Kendal, 1727 Applethwaite, 1745 Kirby, 1760 Kirby, 1801 Asby, 1803 Dufton, 1803 Croglin, Cumberland.

I'll have a look, you never know.

Thanks

Gillian...I'm getting mixed up with my Posts and my PMs......lol...I've PM'ed you as well!!......I forget and use the PM as a thread.

Somebody earlier mentioned the CR Archives.....will look out for it next time I go over, is it in Appleby?.......I don't suppose it's in a small village like CR.

The CR archive is in CR in the old smithy where my g grandparents, Richard and Margaret (nee Ellwood) Johnson, lived.

I haven't looked at wills. William Ellwood 1820 sounds interesting.  My William b1772 Dufton married in St Michael's Appleby but I have never found out where he actually lived. Where abouts is Troutbeck?

There were Riggs at Blasterfield Farm before John Ellwood my gg grandfather lived there. There were Riggs in CR when my mother lived there: a brother Hugh and two sisters, one called Hetty, who ran the village post office.

Gillian.....I'm looking at an old map for Troutbeck, I've heard of it but can't find it now.....got Littlebeck, Turnbeck, Drybeck, Scalebeck.......but no Troutbeck as yet.   Fancy your family still being there, right down to your mother.

Yes the Riggs were there as well........but matching them all up is something else..........my heads spinning.....lol....wonder if the Riggs in the post office are mine Cheesy

That 1820 will does sound interesting.....I was thinking Deborah meant it was online like the earlier ones, but it will have to be sent for.

I'll just have another look for Troutbeck.....have you a feeling that's where he lived.?

Troutbeck can be found between Windermere and Ambleside, just off the Kirkstone Pass. The village of Troutbeck is spread along a hillside which runs from Town End to Town Head. The houses, cottages and farms can be found spread along a narrow lane bordered by dry-stone walls. Most of the buildings can be found or centred around springs or wells.

There we are.

Not sure if I provided this information to a previous query and I am finding it hard to follow the thread (as I'm you understand) but some other CR Ellwood info that you may not have seen:

In 1828 William Ellwood aged 11 was apprenticed to John Riggs of Maulds Meaburn as a tailor until age of 18.

There was an inquest held into the death of William Ellwood at Morland in 1795.

There was some aggro in CR in 1787 between William Ellwood of Lankaber. his wife Frances, his servant Anthony Carleton, George Ellwood of Bolton (amongst others) on one side and William Furness of Lofterans on the other.

Don't worry Deborah...I'm finding it difficult to follow the thread myself...lol

I just answer everything...

That information is great.....I didn't know about the apprenticeship or the inquest.

I had read about the trouble somewhere when I first started doing my tree a few years ago.....but I couldn't remember where......(senior moment)

Thanks very much...I'll look into that.....everyones so helpful.

Hi Fay,

Had you noticed that there are two Joshua Ellwood deaths in 1841 West Ward in Freebmd? The image confirms two entries but they are difficult to read. One will be baby Joshua, the other?

Thanks Gillian....yes one Joshua is a baby born to William Ellwood and Ann Rigg on 23/5/1841 and died in 1841

I have Joshua (husband of Mary Lunsen) being buried 1/7/1791 in CR, unless this one is an earlier Joshua.......come to think of it....I haven't got a Joshua born to Joshua & Mary, there must be one......then there's another generation of William Ellwood and Elizabeth Mattison, parents of William who married Ann Rigg.

I haven't been back looking at Joshuas' for ages, too busy sorting Williams' out...lol

I'll have to have a look at the other Joshua who died in 1841 and see where he fits in. .....what's strange is that after William and Ann Rigg's baby Joshua died.......the name didn't appear again.......Joseph did but not Joshua.

I going to print them all off and sit and go through them

Thanks Gillian

Gillian I was just looking at your Thomas (pardon the expression), the one with a son called Lazonby.........that's surely a surname I've come across, I would think it belonged to a mother or grandmother, somewhere along the line.

Fay

Hi Fay,

Just to confuse you a little I have found another William Ellwood in the 1841 census:

Maulds Meaburn, Dryevers

Thomas Ellwood 55 Farmer
Mary Ellwood 35
William Ellwood 55
Frances Ellwood 8
Sarah Ellwood 6
Margaret Ellwood 4
Mary Ellwood 2
Margaret Harefield 15 FS

All born in county.

As the eldest daughter is called Frances could Thomas be the son of William & Frances and William is Thomas' brother??!! This would confirm that your William is not the son of William & Frances.

In 1851 Thomas & family are living in MM, Roans Farm, but William is not with them. Thomas' place of birth is MM & is 70yrs. He is still going strong in 1861 aged 80 now living Lankabar MM!

Any thoughts?

Yes Gillian, I think I'm probably right with the parents I've already got, as there's no Frances/Francis's in my family, although I do have Thomas's (then hasn't everyone) so it goes like this.

Joshua Elwood,Morland and Mary Lunsen,1722,Kirkland, Cumberland
William Elwood 1769 from CR, Shap and Eliz. Mattison from CR
William Ellwood,1795,CR and Ann Rigg,1801,CR
Jonathan Ellwood,1824,Morland and Jane Collinson,1834,Middleton Teesdale

Gillian, I think we'll have to take every Ellwood from the Parish/Registers/census and try to sort the families out........mind boggling!!
Is your tree sorted yet, did you find a previous marriage for John?

I'll have to get back to my Riggs sometime, seeing as you gave me that info.

Thanks for that.

Hi Fay,

A contact from Genesreunited is researching John Ellwood b1826 Morland. She has him married to Elizabeth Dawson 1/7/1858 Old Hutton.
