Bad Extension
« on: Monday 06 November 06 12:24 GMT (UK) »

I now have my free webspace and am trying to prepare several Word files as an introduction.  I keep getting the message 'the file has a bad extension'.  I'm not very computer literate and don't understand this phrase.  Also, I have Web Publisher in Windows XP.  Does Rootschat accept these files?  Rosemary

Hi Rosemary

I'm not an expert but I have dabbled in a couple of websites so I think I can start you off.

The bad extension is because you need to be working with htm or html pages not word.

Have a look at this link http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,70811.0.html which is a tutorial set up to help start websites.

If you go into the Board called the The Common Room you will find the Free Rootschat Website board with lots more help and tips.

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi Rosemary

What is the name of the extension?

Is it .doc as you are storing Word documents?

Basically the Internet loads files as webpages and they have a .htm file name extension. (HTM = HyperText Markup Language).

You can convert Word documents into webpages by selecting File and then Save As Webpage from the toolbar at the top of the screen.

Still can't get Word to convert my files to HTML.  When I click on file It doesn't offer 'save as web page'  or anything remotely like that.  Do I need to buy a web publishing programme?  Rosemary

Hi Rosemary

I'm not sure what version of Word you are using.  It must be a very old version if it does not offer the facility to convert it to HMTL.

If you do not fancy learning how to construct text documents manually into HTML then you may need to look at the Microsoft website to see if they offer an upgrade of your current version of Word so that you can convert documents into HTML.

Hi Rosemary

If you are in Word and you choose File you should have the option Save as

You get a pop up box if you choose Save as and if you look at Save as Type and scroll down you should see a option for HTML.

But it probably is easier if you get yourself a web publishing programme.  There are some options on the link I gave you above.

I am using Word 97.  I have looked into downloading an update.  I might be forced to ask my son about this, as my computer won't accept it.  Nothing is easy is it?  Rosemary

You can always copy and paste from word into a web publishing programme.  Kerry provided a link due north of here earlier today.

Good luck!

Right - I have now won a Microsoft Front Page on an eBay auction.  Please don't tell me I have done the wrong thing!  However, I have tried to upload my Genopro tree to my website and am having tourble answering all the required questions.  I have read the tutorial till I am blue in the face.  Can someone just tell me what is wrong. I didn't ever get the email message about my site - I just typed in my web address and there was my space.  Have I missed out on any instructions.  I can generate a web page on Genopro but am having trouble answering all the questions they ask to send it to my webspace.  I know my address, user name, password but rootschat.com doesn't accept the file.  Help.

How many pages have you got generated [sorry no pun intended] by Genopro?  And what are the file extensions for the Genopro generated material eg .html, .htm, .gif, .jpeg etc.  And finally, are any of tehse filenames in capitals?

IIn my file manager I have a home page(indexhtml), several other files and the whole content of my Genopro family tree.  When I go onto my site (which by some freak of circumstances is a double address, i.e. http://andersons.rootschat.net/andersons.rootschat.net)  all I see is the Genopro stuff.  How do fix the file so that I have a Home page, etc. and then the Genopro stuff - in VERY plain language please.

Hi Rosemary,

we had a similar problem here recently

see
Topic: TUTORIAL: Step-by-Step Guide to building your website
4 c) Can I put more than one family tree on my website ?
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=93490.msg397242#msg397242
and
4 a) Building a website using a Family History Program (continued)
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,93490.msg397240.html#msg397240
which is a GenoPro example.

4c) includes a "bare-bones" home-page which you can copy into your editor and edit to suit.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

ps.

just looked at your site.

I think you have loaded your GenoPro output into a directory (or folder) called andersons.rootschat.net on your website andersons.rootschat.net, hence the double-name.

If you use the tips above, then rename the folder on your web site to any other name (anderson-family, or whatever) and store the new index.html in the root directory of your website.

Sorry Bob, you lost me when you said 'copy into your editor'  My other files were prepared in Word and converted to html files.  I have now renamed the folder and my websitecannot be found!  I know I'm a silly old biddy, but am determined to get this right if it takes me another 10 years.  I have redone my first (home)page in Front Page 97 and can't export it as my knowledge of adresses etc. is minimal.  Bet you wish you weren't online.
