Wilson Mallinson married Maria Holroyd at Christ Church, Linthwaite on 19 Oct 1890. Wilson is denoted as a widower on their marriage certificate and I know about his previous marriage.
However, Maria Holroyd is denoted as a widow on the marriage certificate. I have her birth certificate and she is Maria Holroyd at birth.
I cannot find another marriage for Maria and, if she was a widow, then presumably she would not be a Holroyd when marrying Wilson Mallinson; unless in the unlikely event she just happened to previously marry a male Holroyd.
Is it simply a mistake? My only doubt is that Maria was 30 when she married Wilson so she was quite old in those days to be marrying for the first time.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thank you.

What was her fathers name and occupation on the marriage cert and were there any Holroyd witnesses
If her father was John Holroyd a ?fuller miller then it could be a mistake on the cert
There is a Maria Holroyd marriage in 1881 in Bradford

Thank you CarolW.
Her father was indeed John Holroyd but John (Taylor) Holroyd, a farmer, of Linthwaite. There were no Holroyd witneses; these being Arthur Hellawell and William Stanley Crowther.
Maria was born in Linthwaite in 1860, baptised in Linthwaite in 1861 and married (as Maria Holroyd) to Wilson Mallinson in 1890 in Linthwaite. All the family is Linthwaite based and has no connection, as far as I know, with Bradford.
Also, there are no children present with other surnames in Wilson and Maria's household in the 1891 census.

You are right, this is the family. I do not have the 1861 and 1871 census information; just the 1881 and 1901 together with details from the birth and marriage certificates so first of all, thank you.
May I ask why, in your earlier post, you said it it may be a mistake if Maria's father, John, was a fuller miller?

Hi
If father plus occupation on marriage cert was in line with the census entries then the status of widow could be an incorrect entry

Thank you, CaroleW.
I rather suspected this myself as Maria married under the name of Holroyd but I am grateful for your input. It just seemed a daft mistake for someone to make!
Unfortunately I haven't seen the parish registers for Christ Church, Linthwaite so I have no way of double checking.

A fiche of the Christ Church, Linthwaite registers will probably be at the WY Archives at Huddersfield Library if you can get here.

Thank you, Rob. As Maria was born and raised in Linthwaite and then married in Linthwaite, I think it is simply a mistake.

The details of the marriage taken from the parish registers are the same as you have.
19 Oct 1890 Wilson Mallinson 30 W, Tailor Slack John Mallinson (dec) Teazer Maria Holroyd 30 W, Weaver Upper Clough John Taylor Holroyd Farmer W: Arthur Hellawell & William Stanley Crowther
These can be viewed on the site below, very useful for the Mallinson surname.

Thank you, Christine. I was aware of this site but not of the extracts from the Parish Registers.
Unfortunately, it doesn't solve the problem. If Maria was described as a widow in the Parish Registers then this information was, presumably, automatically transferred to the marriage certificate.
I still think it must be a mistake but it seems as though I shall never know.
