Webby

I think that she married the Withers chappie and that the 1861 transcription is wrong.

Is it the 1861 where she is with her parents and a soldiers wife?

Have you found Withers death?

Smiley Hi Jo, I was just about to reply to Webby about my census showing just

Julia  W   '' (Rice)  Mar   Soldiers Wife     Southampton Hants

Do you see Unm or Mar?

by the looks of your post your looking at the same thing as me. I wonder if the enumaerator just wrote ditto under Rice and didnt enter her married name? It's a good job for Webby that she was still in situ at the parents house or she would probably never have been found. I'm looking for her in the 71 at the moment Smiley

Smiley Hi....l only found this one

             William Withers b1845 died 1879  age34

              Poole Dorset  A/M/J  5a  202

This would be spooky if it turned out to be the right one as this is where l live. Couldnt find a Richard Fryer/frier in 71 Dorset with Julia, but couldnt find either a William with wife Julia??? where are they? Huh

Cheryle

Yes, I'm looking at the same as you on the '61. No doubt, she is a soldiers wife and married. I wonder if the W is for Withers? I think that the most likely option is that the enumerator has *assumed* Rice is her surname being that she is at home with mummy & daddy  Smiley

I wonder if they were overseas on the '71 with William being in the military? Do we know where any children were born?

Smiley I'M just on the trail now. In the 81 Julia has a child called Matilda with her. She is 5, so l checked....found this

             Matilda Withers  Bath  Somerset  1875  J/A/S  5c  595

So it looks like Julia was in Somerset at least in 1875, but still cannot find the family in 1871
but l thought it was strange that she had been married since 1861 and only seemed to have one child...unless William Thomas was away all the time  and then he was the one that died registered in Poole in 1879.
but it always seems to be one step forward and two steps back Cry

This family is getting beyond me I'm afraid.   Sad

I'm starting to think that you all may be correct in thinking that Ellen was married under another name and also that Julia was baptised under something else as well.

As well as that.........I'm also wondering whether the Mary & Robert in earlier Census are William's first family and not his brother & sister as I originally thought.

This of course leaves lots of conjecture and not much else at this time I'm afraid.

If any of you really kind people out there find anything that might be of help in this really strange family, please let me know, as I would be really really grateful!

Regards
