How to find a census record address?
« on: Monday 13 November 06 22:10 UTC (UK) »

I haven't worded that very well but anyway here goes..

I have a print out of some census records with my family on.  I can read most things like names dates etc...but I'm struggling to read the addresses on them!  The writing is pretty awful!

Any idea's on how I can get this info elsewhere?

Thanks

Hi, that would be great.

Its 1861 RG9/1157.  Schedule number 18 (Stephen Welham).  Looks like something 'tye'.  Streathe?  Hearthe?  I really don't know what to make of that and I've tried to find a similar address on the Barking Tye village website where they have a house name index and I can't find anything like it.  Or anything like the other house name on the census which looks like 'clubhouses'Huh

I also have a print of the 1851 census for the same Stephen Welham but the page I have doesn't have anything filled in on the 'name of street etc...' column.  This is Ref HO107/1797.

Thanks again!  Hope someone can help me figure this out! Smiley

Hi there,

It's

Near  the  Tye

The Tye in Barking is huge, we drive through Barking/Barking Tye when going to Framlingham (Husbands home town).

Often lads playing well organised games of football on the Tye at weekends.

If it's Near the Tye there are many cottages along the street facing the Tye.

Best wishes,

SM ...

Another way to get at this is to go to what I call the Index page of the enumerator's pages.  This is the page that describes the streets covered by the pages that follow.  It will list all the street names, usually in the order that they appear on the sheets.  This gives you a second "view" of the street name, and often it is clearer, as they're not so tired at the beginning.  Look near the top of the page, where there is a sequence which shows you how the page you have in front of you was arrived at.  It usually starts on the left with something like 1841 census UK, then the name of the county, then the area, then the district on the right, all in a line.  Take note of which number of district you are in, then click on the area and then on the description of the district in question, and you will get the page that describes the district.

Also, you can sometimes see the name of the street written on the preceding or succeeding page.  If you're using ancestry, just hit "previous" or "next" to get these.

I really hope that's clear.  A bit hard to explain.  But it worked for me today.

Couldent do this with the second one as it was the first page, so the previous was greyed out, went forward about 5 pages but nothing listed.

It DOES say Near the Tye doesn't it.  Thanks for that.

Is the main street the B1078?  I was trying to figure out where it might be on here http://www.midsuffolkdc.gov.uk/localplan/map_htm/inset_006/inset_006_009.htm

I have never been there that I know of but only live in Ipswich.  So will have to have a drive up there and have a look one day!  Take my camera too!

Thanks again

Patrish.

Ah, yes, this is sometimes the case.  The thing to try then would be to look at the index page, where all the streets will be listed by name, usually in the order that they appear in enumeration, so it would be the first one listed.  Sorry, I don't have access to ancestry myself, just when I'm at the library.

Hello again,

yes the B1078 is probably the road where your ancestor lived.

I think late last night I may have muddled up the location of the school with the location of the Village Hall - which is where I pulled in to change a tyre one dark, rainy night - some big strong men attending a club/function at the hall came out to help me (I would have stayed longer, but I was on my way to meet husband in Framlingham)  Grin  Grin  Grin
Also the once very famous pub, The Barking Fox - which nowadays is a restaurant (can't remember if it is a Chinese or Indian restaurant) is just across the road.

Have a look on www.old-maps.co.uk - put in Barking Tye and see if you can find the school, as that was only a couple of entries on past your people on the route of the enumerator.

Hi patrish

Maybe this might help.

As you have Ancestry go to 1861 Census scroll to bottom of page and click Northamptonshire then click Kettering  and go to View description of enumeration district this is what is being called the Index page etc.
This should show you the way enumerator walked when he took the information.

Or if already in the district i.e.page 8 of 20 look at the information above the page displayed look to the right and click to go back to the enumeration district and click View description of enumeration district .

If I had made it worse I will say sorry in advance.

Sandy

Yes, that's what I meant!  sorry I couldn't explain it better, as I don't have a suitable ancestry screen available to me at home.  Thanks for clarifying what I meant, Sandy.  This street ought to be the first one named.

Hi Sandy,

Have followed the instructions, on the page before the cenusus image it says ED dist 3 but on Barking Town it is listed as 1a 1b 1 c etc. so where is dist 3, I logically tried 1c but dont think its that as it says it starts at Mr. Collins Hse on the corner of Hart Street, but the first person on the right image is a Charles Peasey?

Help please Patrish.
