Alexander Baillie
« on: Tuesday 14 November 06 22:54 UTC (UK) »

I am seeking information about my great grandfather, Alexander Baillie.
He was born about 1853 in Newton Stewart, and was a stone carver/sculptor prior to his move to the USA in 1894. I believe that he worked on the statue of the Earl of Galloway that is located in Newton Stewart.

I would like to learn his date of birth and if he had any brothers/sisters.

On his marriage registration dated December 29,1875, he lists his parents as John Baillie (deceased) and Margaret (Agnew) Baillie who attended the wedding.
I found a John Baillie on the 1851 census, married to a Margaret. If this is the right family, Alexander would appear on the 1861 scottish census as about 8 years old.   If someone has access to that census, any information would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi Rebb

Welcome to RootsChat!

I can't see Alexander's birth details coming up on IGI, but I can see two brothers' birth details (it would appear the first Robert died and the name was used again for the following birth):

1. ROBERT BAILEY  Birth: 31 MAY 1855 Penninghame, Wigtown, Scotland
2. ROBERT BAILLIE  Birth: 19 JUL 1857 Penninghame, Wigtown, Scotland

You're in luck! Showing above is an 1855 birth cert. This was the first year of official registration in Scotland. For one year only, the BMD certs ran over two pages of the register and included a wealth of additional info. By 1856, the certs had been cut back to one page (still brilliant for info though!. The 1855 birth cert. should include the ages of parents/marriage dates/ how many children they had, alive & deceased etc.

BMD certs. are available to view on line at Scotlands People, the official pay to view site for Scottish records www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/.

Regards.

If you haven't researched in Scotland previously, you should have a look at two guides here on Rootschat which outline how to start and what to expect in terms of info. Also, how to maximise your use of Scotlands People (save money/units) by doing more accurate and effective searches!

The 1851 Wigtown Census is free to search at www.dumgal.gov.uk/historicalindexes/census.aspx

In Penninham, this may be John and Margaret:

BAILIE John, head, LABOURER Agricultural, 42, b. Penninghame Wgt
BAILIE John, son, 1, b. Penninghame Wgt
BAILIE Margaret, wife, 34, b. Glenluce Wgt
BAILIE Peter, son, 7, b. Penninghame Wgt
BAILIE Alexander, widower, Labourer agr., 71, b. Ireland
BAILIE James, son, 4, b. Penninhame Wgt

Address: Grange (895), Penninghame

REBB, I've just realised you have this info already! It's the 1861 Census you're after! I haven't viewed the image, but from the search results in Penninhame, this looks like the BAILEY household. You will have to view to confirm:

John, 54
Margaret, 44
Peter, 17
James, 14
Alexander, 9
Elizabeth, 7
Robert, 3

We have the right family I think. From the 1881 Census, Alexander is showing birth place as Penninghame:

Alexander BALLIE, 28, Monumental Mason, b. Penninghame, Wigtown.
Helen K. BALLIE, 24, wife, b. Glasgow, Lanark
Mary H. BALLIE, 4, daughter, b. Penninghame, Wigtown
John, 2, son, b. Penninghame Wigtown
Robert A. BALLIE, 5 months, son, b. Penninghame, Wigtown
David MOFFAT, boarder, unmarried, 23, brewer's clerk, b. Sorn, Ayr

Address: Gertrude Cottage, Penninghame.

From IGI, this looks like a strong possibility for Alexander's father John's christening entry, an actual extract from the Old Parish Registers (OPRs):

JOHN BAILIE  Christening:  22 DEC 1806  Penninghame, Wigtown, Scotland
Parents: Father: ALEXANDER BAILIE  Mother: JEAN CLARK

A few death entries for you to follow up on Scotlands People:

1876   BAILLIE   MARGARET/ AGNEW    age 60    in PENNINGHAME   /WIGTOWN   GROS Ref: 895/00 0055

1875   BAILLIE   JOHN age 68 in PENNINGHAME/WIGTOWN GROS Ref: 895/00 0031

and a possible for John's father:

1856   BAILLIE   ALEXANDER/ MCKIE (mother's maiden name)     age 76 in PENNINGHAME/WIGTOWN   GROS Ref: 895/00 0023

There are 13 death entries in Penninghame between 1855-1955 for Bail*ey. I can see some of Alexander's siblings listed there.

Good luck!

Regards.
