Photographs of Whitchurch area Gravestones etc - Offer
« on: Sunday 14 November 04 09:38 GMT (UK) »

Hi All,

If anyone wants any details of headstones etc in the Whitchurch,  North Shropshire, area -
I will do my best to oblige - if you give me as much detail as possible.

Just to Add - Whitchurch - under a third have headstones of which only a third are readable.

So don't expect to much!!

Have just found this site which has details of how you can purchase lists of MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS in Shropshire - expect this is better than me walking round - except it cost a few pounds.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SAL/SFHS/MI_Transcripts.html

Will carry on - but for a complete list try the above.

Cheers

Keith

Hi Keith,  Just posted a message to you on your visit to Records Office but noticed this posting - do you live in the Whitchurch area and if so what local records are available.

My husband's family originated from Whitchurch and I have found finding sources extremely difficult.

When I visited there some years back I had no luck in graveyards etc.

Hi Irene,

Yes got your message about records office will see what comes up.

Yes I now live in Whitchurch, Shropshire - the library only has stuff for the very local area - census for 1841 and 1901 + parish registers - again only for Whitchurch,Prees, Whixall and surrounds - any use??

Graveyard is a bit of a mess - any names required? - and when the sun comes out and the winds stop I can have a look for you.

Cheers

Hi Keith,

Absolutely on the Parish Records and census in Whitchurch Library.

I should imagine that you should find my Hunt's there!!

Basically on a lot of them I'm hoping that there might be info on the actual parish records that I don't have from the indexes at SOG.

Can you let me know when you are likely to visit library and I will type up a readable, user friendly list and send.
Regards, Irene

Hi Irene

Any time you are ready - It's only down the road - You've got me worried now talking about lists!!  Grin Grin Grin

No - anything you think they have put down - can use this as practice for when I go to Herts Records to look up details for my Tree - hopefully in the Spring/Summer.

Just remember I don't think the records go as far as Market Drayton - that only 15 miles away - but the local library records still only goes a few miles away!!

Fire Away

Cheers

Hi Keith,  Sorry do get you worried - the list is not large and I have all the actual dates with one exception.

What I am hoping is that on the parish record itself there is more info than I have got from the indexes at SOG and IGI.  What I'm really looking for is any of these things - Ages, Parents Names, OTP or otherwise (with regard to marriages).  Regarding baptisms actual birthdates if included because I have some really strange marriage ages.

Anyway here they are - am including Adderley and Norton in Hales in the hope that their records are also at Whitchurch library!

WHITCHURCH

Marriages

5 November 1771   David Hunt & Elizabeth Chesters
4 January 1827  John Cox & Elizabeth Cooke
14 October 1767   John Cooke & Hannah Harrison
19 January 1729   Richard Cooke & Ann Lowe
22 April 1700  Roger Cooke & Mary Yates

Baptisms

10 August 1800   Elizabeth Cook
13 April 1788   John Hunt
C1750  Elizabeth Chesters  (this is a rough date could be either way)

ADDERLEY

MARRIAGES

31 December 1829   Joseph Hunt & Hannah Bloore
18 November 1809   John Hunt & Mary Blantern

BAPTISMS

19 April 1812   Joseph Hunt

NORTON IN HALES

MARRIAGES

11 November 1792   Abraham Bloore & Rhoda Austin
C1720    Daniel Bloore & Sarah Dutton

BAPTISMS

15 October 1758   Abraham Bloore (I know his father's name is Thomas but I'm hoping for a mothers name)
21 February 1830   James Hunt

I know its a huge ask Keith but anything at all would be fantastic and please contact me if I can do anything "down under" for you.

Cheers, Irene

Hi Irene,

Do you want the good news  Grin Grin or the not so good news  Wink Wink or the bad news  Angry Angry

Start with the bad news Adderley and Norton are not there - ONLY Whitchurch - nowhere else - except for the censuses
The not so good news the records are typed from 1745 -1812 and then on fiche from 1813-1892 - so not much extra information on the typed copies - only witnesses.

Right - now the good news - I found the rest and some more Chester/s while I looked at the baptisms - hope 1758 doesn't throw you to much!!

Marriages
As Stated nothing before 1745
5 Nov 1771 David Hunt & Elizabeth Chesters - by banns Witness John Llewellin
14 Oct 1767 John Cooke & Hannah Harrison - by banns Witness Ann Perry.

Page 161 Parish of Whitchurch, County of Salop.
John Cox & Elisabeth Cook ["e" at the end of name scrubbed out -very particular!] - both OTP. - by Banns
4th day of January 1827 - by me William Teuton in the presence of Joseph Cox and Mary Ellis.
Both signed their names - no X marks here!!

I have listed some extra Chester/s found as even if they are not yours they might help someone else!!

Baptisms.
1749 - July 30th George son of Thomas & Mary Chester
1750 - Dec 26th John son of Thomas & Margaret Chesters
1754 - Feb 26th Thomas son of Joseph & Elisabeth Chesters
Apr 15th Sarah Dau of John & Sarah Chesters
Nov 10th William son of John & Susan Chesters
1756 -  July 25th Daniel son of John & Mary Chester
1758 -  March 30th Elisabeth dau of John & Sarah Chester
March 31st  Thomas son of Thomas & Margaret Chester
1760 -  May 10th Joseph son of Joseph and Elizabeth Chester
1761 -  May 9th Richard base son of Jane Chester

Hope that helps a bit!!

Cheers

Keith

Thank you Keith,

I doubt with the Elizabeth Chester (baptism) is mine because its too late - of course she may have been a late baptism.

Do you know if there is any reason why the Whitchurch Parish REcords are so meagre or are they stored elsewhere?

Also do you know where the Norton-in-Hales and Adderley ones are kept?

The Cooke/Cox info was great because the witness being Joseph Cox sort of tells me that I have the right family because I have John Cox with a brother a couple of years younger and father named Joseph.

What census' does the library have?  I gather you mean just for Whitchurch!

Regards, Irene

Hi Irene,

Thanks for the reply re Edward!!

Yes I saw afterwards that Elizabeth was a bit young for kids!!
I did start a couple a years before -1848 I think - do you want me to have another go earlier?
I did ask if that was all the parish records they had and got an abrupt YES!
Will try to find out where the Norton & Adderley ones are - but think I will phone!
They have the 1841 and 1901 for Whitchurch and close by - ie Whixall, Press and Tilstock.

I have only just moved into Whitchurch so not sure where the other libraries are - but will find out  - may be able to go as Adderely and Norton are not far.

Cheers

Hello Keith,
I have a connection with Whitchurch in that my 2 x Gt grandmother came from the area and was married in the parish church of Whitchurch in June 1869 to my 2 x gt grandfather Robert Mann (born North Shields). Her name was Mary Ellen Sutton and her father was William Sutton. She and Robert moved to Northumberland where they remained for the rest of their lives. In later census she has registered her place of birth as either Marbury (1871) or Norbury (1881). I think these places are just over the border in Cheshire (?). I do not have a specific request of you other than if you do come across any instances of Suttons in local records or graveyards I would be pleased and grateful for the information. I know William (A sawyer) was married to Frances and they lived in St Marys St Whitchurch in the 1871 & 1881 census. Many thanks.

Hi sandraanne,

Will see what I can find - some are not that readable - but will have a look when the wind drops!!

Regarding the name  Whitchurch :

Whitchurch takes its name from a 14th century church built of white stone and dedicated to St. Alkmund. The church completely collapsed in 1711, and was replaced by the present church with the same dedication

Cheers
