This request is a bit vague but I would be grateful for any help that Rootschatters may be able to give.

I am looking for the marriage, I suspect around the time of WW1 or just after, of Dorothy or Dorothea Jackson to someone called Heaton who came from the Haworth area.

She was my m-i-law's eldest sister and was born in 1897 in Woolwich.

Her Heaton husband apparently died tragically and then before WW2 she married a Dutchman (we think his name was Van Elswick) went to Holland and was never heard of again.

I am trying to piece together the events and as I say any help would be welcomed.

Thank you Barbara.  I think that must be the one.  I have now found a death for him in Southampton in 1934.  That timing would fit.  I know they had 2 daughters Shirley and Joan.  It would be great to find out what happened to them afterwards and about the Holland connection during WW2.

Best wishes
Ellen

Do you think she married the Dutchman in England before disappearing?  If so there are only a few years to trawl through to find that marriage...

Hi Barbara

I have no idea when or where she married.  I think that must be my next search.  My m-i-law was 17 years younger than her sister -  She is now 92 and her memory of some things is very sketchy.  Sometimes I think deliberately so if she thinks she would rather we didn't know something!

She told me that Owen Heaton was a member of a prominent Haworth family called Heaton.  He did indeed come from Keighley, next door, but his father was a tailor in the 1891 and 1901 census!

Thanks for your help

After all this time I have just had the most amazing discovery - quite by chance and some "googling".  Dorothea stayed in the USA during the war, with her daughters and died in California in about 1989!!!

Shirley died about 10 years ago and I have been in touch with Joan's daughter and granddaughter.  They are bewildered as to where the Holland story came in, although I think that Shirley's husband was of Dutch descent which may expain things!!

Unfortunately my m-i-law (93) had a stroke just before Christmas and probably won't be sure about things when we tell her!!

I'm so exited and looking forward to more family photos.  I have been able to help them fill in background and some old pix.  Isn't it great?!!
